This festival is being celebrated all over India as our India is an agricultural based country. Moreover it is a practice in our country that before start to eat we used to worship the food. Similarly we worship the Sun God as the protector of our agricultural lands for a better yield. Alternatively many says that an agriculturist get a good yield on this day before Makar Sankaranthi after selling his produce which he obtained as a result of hard work in the agricultural field. Normally the farmers and agricultural related persons celebrated this festival with their children, family and friends. On this occasion villages are found with grand festival mood. Many people those who settled in towns and cities from the villages also go there on that day to participate the joy of the farmers, their relatives/friends. This is celebrated in towns also in order to make the agriculturists feel happy. Though this is called in different names the purpose and way of celebrating are one and same.
Wishing all ISCns a Happy Makar Sankaranthi!

Makara is the zodiac sign of Capricorn and Sankranti means transition. 'Makara Sankranti' marks the transition of the Sun from the zodiac of Sagittarius (Dhanu) to Capricorn (Makara).

There are twelve zodiac signs, and every month, the Sun transits from one zodiac sign to another. There are twelve Sankranti(s) in a year, and the foremost are the Mesha Sankranti (14 April) and the Makara Sankranti(14/15 January). The Makara Sankranti is also known as 'Uttarayana', because from this day, the Sun starts moving from the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere. This is the period of 'Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamaya', or the journey from darkness towards light - the spiritual light of knowledge, creativity and attainment. The days start getting longer and warmer.

Makara Sankranti is dedicated to the Sun and is observed as beginning a period of resurgence.

Makar Sankranti time is such a time that there are so many festivals concurrently going on in the country as per the local traditions or the community preferences for the respective celebrations. In our country, it is celebrated with much fun and frolic. In some states, kite flying is the major activity while in others partying and having good food take precedence.
In some places, food is offered to crows in the early morning. In some northern hilly places, garlands of homemade sweets are worn while feeding the crows. There is a great variety of celebrations across our country.
On this auspicious occasion, I take this opportunity to wish a happy and prosperous time to all the members of the ISC family.
