What do you think about this trend?

Many people firmly believe that Government officials are lazy and good-for-nothing. Some of them are believed to be corrupt also. At least some members in ISC also have the same opinion about Government employees. A member earlier stated that Government employees can never compete with employees in private sector.

However, in actuality, we see that a large number of people in Government (Central Government and State Governments) and in PSUs join the private sector after their retirement/after taking voluntary retirement. I can quote hundreds of examples. Many MTNL/VSNL employees have been working very successfully in private mobile companies when MTNL/VSNL downsized their operations. Many senior officials in Government join private sector after the mandatory cooling-off/gap period. I have seen even lower-level employees in PSU Banks successfully switching over to private sector banks. Many Government school teachers work in private schools after their retirement.

Yesterday, my last boss (now retired) contacted me for some work. While talking, he told me that after retirement, he has now joined an NGO in a responsible position. He informed me that the work he is presently doing is ridiculously less compared to his earlier responsibilities in Government. He also informed me that his current pay package is almost (more than 90%) equal to his previous pay package in the Government. He is enjoying life with his present salary and pension for his previous Government service.

What do the members think about this increasing trend of retired/voluntarily retired Government/ PSU officials joining private sector jobs?

It is definitely not bad if you have the opportunity and the salary is good, no harm in joining the Private Sector after your retirement. But then, not everyone will be getting such opportunities. Only those who have the talent or specialized in that field can hope for such openings. As for government or public sector officials being lazy, it is not the fault of the person, but the atmosphere of work in that organization that makes someone lazy or efficient. I myself have worked in all three, i.e. first government, then private, and now the public sector. I am fully aware of the work style in all three. From my present company also many have joined in the private sector, but they are mostly those who had held very senior and responsible positions in our company or those who had specialization in a certain niche area. With reduced responsibilities in their new job, the work pressure for most of them is low, and the salaries too are comparable. After all, it is for their experience and wisdom that they are being paid. Being veterans, they don't have to involve themselves much in fieldwork which is mostly left to the junior staff.

What the author has indicated is not far from the truth. We are making our own image of the public sectors and the government departments categorising them inefficient organisations but in reality, it is not like that. The staff strength in the government departments are comfortable where both efficient and inefficient workforce are there and hence telling that these organisations are the lazy departments are partly true. There are officers and non executives working for the organisations with dedication to maintain the image of their organisations and this definitely produces results.
If they join the private organisations, they get abundant opportunities to show their inherent skills to their employers which ultimately translates the fulfilment of enhanced targets. The talented bosses direct their subordinates with their full confidence how the objectives could be realised based upon their experience and the subordinates being dedicated in nature proceed in their work according to their bosses to achieve their common goals - enhanced productivity as set by the organisation.

The country needs to be administered every second of the day. The Union Government and the State governments administer with the help of the government employees. Whichever may be the political parties in power, the government employees go on with their work so that administration goes on smoothly. Government employees are the backbone of the country. It is only a misconception that government employees are lazy and inefficient.
There may be corruption but it is mainly induced by the public who want their work to be completed earlier than others' work. These days, the workload for government employees is more than what it was previously. Understand the difficulties of government employees and appreciate their work.

Govt departments are well known for their inefficiency and corrupt practices. But every employee is not like that. In my view, I understand that 80 to 85% of Govt employees are good and doing their work honestly. It is the remaining strength that is creating problems and defaming the Govt organizations.
All those Govt employees who are sincere in their work have a potential of getting jobs in private enterprises and it is happening also. Many Govt employees after retirement join private companies and function successfully.

Umesh Sir has said: "Govt departments are well known for their inefficiency and corrupt practices. But every employee is not like that. In my view, I understand that 80 to 85% of Govt employees are good and doing their work honestly. "-----------Does he mean only 10% to 15% of Government employees create a wrong impression about Government service?
I actuality, most of the employees in private sector don't even understand the nature of Government work. They always look at the target-achievement aspect of jobs. They can't even comprehend there may be jobs without such target-achievement perspective.
I am now going to narrate a small incident. I am sure all of us know that the National Education Policy has been accepted in 2020. The previous Education Policy was adopted in 1992, 28 years before than the present policy. Now, a dignitary from the private sector commented that this meant the Policy Division of the Ministry didn't function for 28 years! We were astounded by this comment, but quickly understood that this is nothing but 'Target-Achievement' mindset. Such people don't understand anything except this. To such people, Government officials never work because there is no Target-Achievement evaluation.

Government Employees previously used to get very less salary after the private sector employees earning lacs of rupees as salary and with the taxes the central government is paying high salaries for the employees. Are the government employees are doing their work The answer is strict No .The Government employees recruitment process is not at all trust worthy especially the Central government employees. Since the recruitment process is not good hence their work is also well predicted.

Are we discussing the efficiency of government employees or are we supposed to discuss the trend, including the reasons and effects, of retired government employees taking up jobs in the public/ private enterprises? Even while deviating from the topic to further our explanations, I don't think we should move away far from the purpose for which a thread is created. Let us not have a repeat of the discussion we had in this ABC thread. Please note.

I have seen many employees at different levels who almost sacrifice their family-life for the sake of Government work. Their family-members also suffer silently but always stand by them at the time of crises. I once wrote a two part story on such an officer here.

Not only such dedicated employees, but nowadays many average employees are getting absorbed in private sector after their retirement, provided their health is more-or-less okay.

One member has commented: "The Government employees recruitment process is not at all trust worthy especially the Central government employees". ---- I don't like to disturb my mental peace commenting on such baseless responses.

Many DRDO Scientists who acquired good knowledge and did an excellent job there are joining many private organisations and extending support richly in their developmental works. There is nothing wrong with this. They have good knowledge that can be used for the development of the country indirectly through these private organisations. The same is the case with ISRO scientists also. The research activities that are being taken up by these scientists are helping juniors to acquire knowledge from them. R & D in private organisations is also catching up and some jobs for youngsters are also available in this field.
I agree with KVRR that corruption is basically because of the selfish nature of some people from the public. They want some favours to be done for them by the government people and they are trying to attract government officers by giving them bribes. Offering bribes is also equally unwanted and attracts punishments. If nobody is giving where from they will take.
