Too many holidays will not help any cause

Pongal is one festival that goes far beyond any religion in Tamil Nadu. It is the symbol of Tamil pride, language, and the identity of an entire race. Everyone celebrates Pongal as there are farmers in every religion and it is impossible for any political party to play politics on the basis of religion. Indeed, this festival has six lakhs and an odd number of people traveling to their native places from Chennai and at least three times this number from the various cities that dot the State.

Yet, for all the supposedly huge traffic that is likely to happen in the reverse direction when the people get back to their places of residence, the Tamil Nadu Government has now declared a holiday on the 18th of Jan 2023.

This is not welcome at all. The schools and the colleges will have a tough time in completing the portions before the entire mass of students takes their Public examinations. Nothing comes without pain. This holiday may be a pleasure but the effects of this is bound to be felt for a long time to come.

I agree with the author. Too many holidays are not advisable. Pongal is a big festival connected with the cultivation and the farming community will celebrate the same in a grand manner. All the families which are shifted from villages to cities will go to their villages without fail for this festival. So we see many people going from cities to villages. They all will be back after the festival. During the festival days, Hyderabad road will not have even half of the regular traffic.
During the COVID pandemic, many employees purchased cars and they started commuting in their own cars. That is why car traffic during this festive season on highways will be very high. As many people have to return from their villages, the TN government might have given one-day extra holiday. But it will not help much as the majority of the people will postpone their journey till the last moment. People who visit their villages once in a year may like spending one extra day there.

Unfortunately, we are having so many holidays in India and this one will simply increase that number by one.
Why I am telling unfortunately is that it is counterproductive action. There is a trend of giving more holidays, especially in Govt sector and that is a bad sign.
Frankly speaking, we have so many religions and cultures in our country that giving holidays to each and everyone will reduce the working days to a number which would simply be a laughing stock.
Even making 5 days a week from 6 days was a big blunder and that has created a bad trend. There should be only one weekly off and that is sufficient. Those who want to take leave can take it from their leave account. Let them spend their hard-earned leaves.
Once people become habitual of more holidays, they consider it their right and if called for duty on holidays start making excuses.

    Knowledge is power.
