The IT sector guys need to add value to stay safe

A huge IT MNC, headquartered in Chennai, was in the news some two years ago, when they retrenched a number of their staff. There were reports of some sort of trade union being formed. One has not heard much about that company since then.

However, informed sources indicate that unless one is ahead of the learning curve, anyone in the 31 to 42 age group is likely to face the axe, sooner or later. Hundreds of those who are smart have taken up online courses in Data Analytics, through the online medium, from the likes of the prestigious IIT Madras.

Similarly, those who change tracks and go in for significant roles in smaller but more agile and growing organizations are also doing well. It is better to be a bigger fish in a smaller pond than to be a small fish in a big ocean. This, it seems, is the mantra.

Upgrade or perish. This seems to be the new slogan.

Information technology is an area that is fast developing and new techniques and methods are being invented for creating more and more robust software systems for the use of industries and business groups.
Today IT employees are facing a big challenge in terms of learning and acquiring new methods and new ideas to remain in the business otherwise it is very likely that those who are not keeping abreast with the new technical environment will be shown to the door sooner or later.
Some of the areas like artificial intelligence, data mining, data science, digital marketing, better coding practices, cloud computing, etc are gaining more importance and people having proficiencies in them are being elevated to higher positions.
In today's environment, it makes sense to acquire learning in niche areas that are being offered by so many reputed online agencies.

    Knowledge is power.

What the author has indicated is not the departure of the current trend where the employees are trying their best to show their performance with updating their knowledge in the domains they are practising. The employers are facing stiff competitions to retain their images in the current market. Hence their expectations from the employees have risen significantly. Hence the employees have to update their knowledge in the different domains such Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, ERP etc so that they can perform enhanced output. They cannot be complacent with their huge experience but they have to look out the possibilities of learning the latest skills which could help them to achieve their targets.

What the author said is true. It is true not only for IT employees but also for all other fields. Perform or perish. To perform our knowledge should always be upgraded. So upgrade or perish has become the slogan of the day. A knife will be very sharp as soon as it is sharpened. Slowly it will lose its sharpness. That is why sometimes in between we will go for sharpening the same. The same is the case here also. Our knowledge will become obsolete as time passes and new technologies develop. We should learn those technologies also if we want to be the front runner.
Recession may come at any time. But irrespective of that if the individual is not performing well. chances of losing a job in a private organisation are always high. So in our own interest, we should learn new skills and see that we will not be lacking in the skills that are needed.
