Scrap Law of Diminishing Returns to make Forum section more vibrant

I think all members of ISC know that in Forum section, if a member raises any Forum post, he/she will be awarded only 1 point, in case of his/her subsequent responses to that Forum post. The length of the subsequent responses of that particular member won't get any consideration.

On the other hand, we also know that in case of Forum posts raised by any other member, we get maximum 5 points (depending upon the length of the response) for our first three responses in that Forum post. Thereafter, the Law of Diminishing Return comes to the picture. In case of subsequent responses in that Forum post, we get 4, 3, 2,1 points/point irrespective of the length of these responses.

I think this Law of Diminishing Returns hampers the vibrant Forum section to some extent. Members get disinterested to submit more than 2-3 responses in a Forum post, because they know further responses will attract the infamous Law of David Ricardo. The exception is only in cases of Active GD, where members post more than seven-eight responses because of additional points credit, cash credit, etc.

In normal Forum post, the initiator generally doesn't return because in that case he/she will get only 1 point for the response. Same thing happens in case of Forum posts raised by other members. Only 2-3 responses at best from a single member!

So, I think ISC management may consider scrapping of Law of Diminishing Returns in Forum section to make this section more vibrant.

    What is your view?

ISC site is functioning for quite some time and they must be following certain rules and regulations based on their experience and the underlying logic which we would come to know soon when editors respond to this query.
In my view, once the initiator of the forum has initiated the discussion then what is required is more responses from other members and occasional intervention by the initiator. The fact is that the initiator has simply started the discussion to get the views of others. This will eventually look like a group discussion but the initiator need not convince others of his viewpoints and feel like a winner. The purpose of forum discussion is not to make the initiator a winner but simply a starter of the discussion process. In such a scenario the present stipulations look alright. This allotment of points is probably done as a balancing act.
    Any other opinions members, please?

I am afraid I could not explain my viewpoint to Sankalan Sir. I humbly request him to read my post again.

He has quoted some general rules about Forum responses, which almost all regular contributors in this section know.

I proposed to make some changes in the system of awarding points to Forum responses to make Forum section more vibrant.

Partha, I think it is a positive suggestion that needs to be considered. Your point will be put up to the webmasters with a request to change the existing system of point allocation with respect to forum responses.

The only point that has to be kept in mind in connection with this suggestion is that members also should be responsible enough and must avoid posting irrelevant responses just for the sake of earning points. It is worth mentioning here that the rule of diminishing points was introduced due to the same reason. Let us see.

What the author has indicated is definitely worthwhile if the jury of editors sit together and devise some ways how there could be more responses from the side of members. If the members are under impression that nothing is to come out with their involvements in the Forum Section except a few points lacking support of financial incentives. ISC management has come up with some attractive formulas attracting the readers to put their responses in this forum with the introduction of some measures making this section more vibrant.
Hope with slight modifications, it could serve the interest of both the members and ISC platform. It is expected that they would heed the request of the author to make the Forum Response more lively with more responses with the amendment of the existing policy.

I appreciate the creative way in which this suggestion has been put forward, with reference to the Law of Diminishing Returns. It did bring a smile to my face!

Saji has brought this to the attention of the admin. and editors, and we are having team discussions on this. We will revert back once a decision is taken.

It is a good suggestion from Partha. The way in which he framed the matter is good and I appreciate him for the same. It is very good to note that Editors responded positively to the proposal and let us see what will be the outcome.

I too feel that it is a good suggestion by the author. From time to time we do need to change the rules accordingly. However, the concern to earn points which is mentioned by Saji in his reply also a major point because of that such rules were made. But, I am sure members here are well aware and will not post their unnecessary replies just to gain points.

Although this is an old thread, we would like to inform members that the admin. has agreed to the suggestion. You will now see the changes implemented in the forum.
