Are you enjoying the cold weather or shivering and cursing it?

There has been a very severe drop in temperatures in various parts of the country for the last couple of weeks in this first month of the year. It was scary, really, to read about minus temperatures in the northern States, even in Delhi, akin to what it is currently in the UK with sub-zero temperatures. Some years ago, we had a very enjoyable discussion on the cold weather, and members gave some useful tips to stay warm and maintain good health in winter.

Do any of you have any additional tips that have worked for you? What about your approach to the weather - do you just love the cold, no matter that you are shivering a good deal, or soundly curse the cold and long for warm, sunny days?

It seems warm days are back in Kolkata during this time. We enjoyed the chill at the beginning of this month but western disturbances didn't allow the chill to settle in for more time. Now the weather is quite erratic in Kolkata, where the highest and lowest temperature rises to above normal and after a couple of days goes a few degrees below normal giving rise to cough and cold. It is quite difficult to avoid cough and cold in this situation and the best way may be to wear a mask and use steam/vapour to feel better. Today, it seems I need to switch on the ceiling fan though I avoided it keeping in mind the fluctuating climate.

Weather fluctuations are quite common this time and such fluctuations are extremely bad with respect to our well being. We need to take utmost care in the morning and evening hours with the full body protection so that we don't fall prey to seasonal fluctuations.
Such trends did occur in the past but frequency was not to that level.
What the author has indicated, I am facing the similar condition in Bokaro Steel City - around 300 km away from Kolkata.

I live in the Navi Mumbai area and normally the weather here is very pleasant in the winter season but this year for the last 4 - 5 days there is a chill in the air and at least for me it is intolerable. Though I belong to a hill area where we had occasional rains and snowfalls during the winter time, today I cannot stand the cold waves. Some of the people in our area told me that normally Navi Mumbai area does not get this type of chill in the wind and it is an unprecedented thing. I do not know how far that is correct but I am feeling cold, especially in the morning time and for me, it is difficult to manage my routine. To avoid any bad effects from this cold I am wearing a woolen and also taking warm water and other precautions which are supposed to be taken in that type of weather. If given a choice, I will choose summertime as I do not mind hot weather.

I love winter. It is my favourite season. I enjoy going for a cup of coffee in a small roadside hotel at the night. One of my friends who stay near my house comes to our house and we both will go to the nearest hotel to have coffee after 10 PM during this season. The only one precaution I take is covering my ears with a woollen hat. I will be keeping the hat on my head while sleeping also, as my fan will be running throughout the night. I rarely cover my body with a bed sheet.
I feel taking a headbath with cold water is not advisable during this season. If at we take a headbath we should get it dried at the earliest using an electrical hair dryer. Talking warm water will keep our throats smooth. One should not go for heavy doses of sweets. If there is any uneasiness in the throat we can inhale hot steam so that throat and nose will get cleared.

Winter was my favorite weather in my childhood. Simply because throughout the day we could play cricket in our playground. Now, for 20 years, I have not had any woolen or warm cloth because I mainly lived in Mumbai and here the cold is manageable for me. Yes, for the last 3-4 years I feel the chillness during January month become more and this year I think it is even more. However, I feel it is the best weather for me.

Weather is always appreciated by one and cursed by another. It is all according to the situation of the person. Good rain is invited by a farmer but cursed by an office going person.
Weather cannot be changed by a human but can be prevented to some extent. A hot climate can be quenched with an Air cooler. Shivering cold can be controlled with a room heater. These are possible only inside the room but is uncontrollable if happened in outside. But as for as I am concerned I normally tolerate with joy if happened in unexpected trip. Once we went to Beas trip via Chandigarh. On reaching the room allotted for us in Beas, my wife casually went to bathroom for washing her hands, without knowing about a chilled weather. Her hands got stiffed with frozen water. Immediately I switched on the geyser and with the hot water her fingers got normal. Next day I went to Amritsar and bough hand gloves and socks for her.
Similarly when we went to Phulbani, Orissa during January, a super chilled weather was there but as we expected that we enjoyed well.

Here in Hyderabad, we are having very pleasant weather. There were a few days of chill, but it was quite manageable as we had plenty of sunshine most of the winter season. In fact, it is a bit cold in the early mornings and late nights only, the rest of the time it is quite warm due to the sunshine. Having stayed in many cities, it is my experience that Hyderabad has one of the most balanced weather. It is never too cold or too hot. The monsoon season comes early and is moderate but prolonged. We don't sweat here much unlike in coastal cities like Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata. But as in other places, the weather is quite erratic these days. For example, this winter we are having bouts of warm weather interspersed with a few days of chill.
    Patience and perseverance pays

Good to know that some of you are experiencing moments of warm sunshine. I do find the cold weather fairly pleasant, but, find it constricting to wear, out of necessity, layers of warm clothing at night when the temperature dips. It is also a bit windy during the day even when stepping out. It does feel good to have warm soup in such weather.

It must be really tough for the poor and homeless people to cope with the extreme cold.

Kashmir is shivering with sub-zero temperatures these days and the harsh winter of forty days called 'chilling Kalan' is on its last leg ending on the last day of January 2023. However, Weather experts have forecasted a fresh spell of huge snowfall on Monday. Advisories have been issued for snow avalanches in different areas in Kashmir.

As for coping with the shivering cold in winter is concerned, a fire-pot is the primary source of warmth for people in Kashmir. Everyone uses it and enjoys with it the chill in Kashmir. There are other electronic gadgets that people use in Kashmir like electric blankets, room heaters, and blowers for heating purposes but people usually don't rely on these gadgets due to a shortage of electricity during winters in Kashmir. So, people mostly use firepots for heating purposes. Hamaam is also common in Kashmir which helps to cope with the winter coolness.

And one has to wear proper clothes, cover his or her face, or wear a muffler and woollen cap to protect oneself from cold and cough, especially elderly people need more care and protection during winter. People in Kashmir wear long tweed fabric called PHERAN and use fire-pots under it to protect themselves from cold.

Cracked skin and cough are more prominent in people during winter, especially children and elderly people who are more prone to these problems. As a remedy for cracked skin, glycerin and Vaseline are essential to overcome the problem. Besides this, we relish some good food that helps people stay energetic in winter.

Ginger Tea can't be compromised, Harissa provides energy and warmth in the morning, and Khewa is everyone's favourite in winter and even when anyone has a cough or cold. Kashmir is known for non-veg food and wazwan but during winter people enjoy rajma dal and our traditional pickles without which winter dishes are incomplete.

As we expect a fresh snowfall, the children are all set for a snow fight and make snowmen and different structures out of snow! Far away from the fear of catching a cough, fever, or cold, children and young alike expose themselves in snow and enjoy it!
