Are very few students interested to become a scientist?

Most students today are aspiring to qualify for engineering or medicine or management or IT degrees for making a good career ahead. Very few of them are having ambitions to become a scientist and try to do fundamental research work. Indeed, everyone cannot become a scientist because it requires a solid background in the science stream and also requires a dedicated workplace life.
Do you also feel that today very few students are interested in becoming a scientist? What are the reasons for that? Please share your ideas regarding this.

Yes, it is true. A career as a scientist no more lures or attracts young people these days. They would rather become a software engineer, doctor, manager, civil servant or a businessman than take the hard way to become a scientist. After all, it is no joke to become a scientist. It takes years of hard labour and a number of degrees to become a scientist of some value. You will require graduation, postgraduation and then perhaps a PhD to become a scientist. The subjects won't be interesting either. The same old physics or chemistry that you so much detested during high school days. Whereas, it is a lot easier to become a software engineer. Moreover, money is also good as an engineer or doctor, if you can establish yourself. On the other hand, as a scientist, you will be mostly employed in a government organisation, where the remuneration may not be too attractive or the scope for growth could be less and time-bound irrespective of your calibre. Yes, some do get attracted to organisations like NASA in the west and head for higher studies there, but they are too few to make a difference. Most prefer an IT job than taking the hassle of being a scientist. Alas, the best brains these days are taking up careers in IT or medicine, neglecting research and pure science.
    Patience and perseverance pays

In India, many people want their sons and daughters to become engineers or doctors only. After completing intermediate, students want to take up courses that will be completed fast and chances of employment are high. Within 5 years after intermediate a person can complete his education and also get into a job. They can settle in their life yearly. To become a scientist at least master's degree in the concerned subject is a must. Getting a seat in PG course after graduation is also a difficult proposition. Even after PG, one should think of going for PhD. A s such it will take a minimum of 8 years after intermediate and the chances of getting a scientist post even after PhD also, chances will be less to get a scientist job. They settle late in their lives. So many people never prefer the scientist posts. But there are people who became scientists irrespective of all these issues.

The career path of the kids is decided by their parents in India and they need to follow the plans as decided by them. Most of the parents want to see their children as engineers or doctors so that in their service careers, they could enjoy their lives comfortably. Especially in case of engineers, they would pressurise their sons and daughters to score impressive marks in IIT so that they could secure computer engineering branch in some prestigious locations in IIT or NIT to ensure that they are readily absorbed in top IT companies.
Craze for medical professionals lure the parents for the rosy lives of their sons and daughters.
In case of service career of scientists, they would not encourage their sons and daughters for this prestigious service since this would require total involvement of their children in such professions. Sometimes, they have to remain aloof from their families for the full concentration in their projects. Money wise, also it is not so rewarding as compared to IT professionals or reputed specialists in medical professions.

There is no point to cry that the smaller number of interesting students for become scientist. It should be the practice that whoever has the real interest, they should enter into that job. And it should be like that. At the moment we have an increased number of Engineering and Medicine students, and the quality is gone down compared to last 5 or 10 years.

    I concur with the author.
It is a sad truth that even science students also do not want to continue higher studies and research in Science nor they want to take up a career in that field. What surprised me much was that not just science students but even science teachers also are not aware of the premier and other scientific institutions in the country. Students 'education tour' also is never made to visit such institutions and industry related enterprise.

I was one who longed for a study and career in scientific field. Luckily I could join one of the premier scientific and research institution in this country as a fresh graduate.

It needs suitable promo and encouragement to attract students to science subjects ,research and career on that field. The remuneration and rewards should be tailored in a way to stand attractive for people to chose this field. I think there are a lot being done in this regard now. But the media and social media are not promoting the info and that is why the students are mostly unaware.

Now that ISC is re-orienting itself to be a 'true academic portal' it can do something in promoting science education, research and career. The sections and sub categories may also create categorie and sub categories under science.
