    The handicapped need special buses

The issue of suitable doors for the handicapped to board buses in Chennai city has now gone to Court. The High Court may come out with some judgment.

However, a technological solution must be found. With the kind of advanced technology floating around, and with the help of an institution like the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, the State Government has to design buses that would have ramps to mount the wheelchairs and then accommodate the people in suitable seats. Obviously, there will be some problems, but social justice demands that handicapped people are given access to special buses, The handicapped hire costly autos for their travel and have many difficulties.

However, the rich and the super-rich have their own customized cars for their personal travel and they really do not face any problems. As usual, it is only the poor who are put to great difficulty. Let us hope that the problem is addressed immediately, not only by the Tamil Nadu Government but by other State Governments as well.

We need unique solutions to unique problems. Let us do our best for those who are unfortunately differently abled. In Tamil, the late Chief Minister, Dr. M. Karunanidhi, a great poet himself, coined a lovely phrase called "matru thiralalagigal" for describing such people. This literally translates into differently abled in English.

Designing such buses may not be a big problem for engineers and technicians. But the amount of space required will be a minimum of three times that of a common man. As such the cost may be high and again we may want the government to provide free buses as they are handicapped. Many handicapped persons are using three-wheelers specially designed for the handicapped. They will be more comfortable. The government can arrange loans without interest so that repaying will also be not a big issue for them.
Now trains are providing free passes to many handicapped. Even they are providing free passes to a helper to the
handicapped. That means two people travelling for free. But there is nothing wrong with helping really deserving people.

It is not necessarily to introduce special buses for handicapped. Instead the stairs could have modified so as to enable the handicapped as well aged people to board freely. Actually there are some buses plying in such a way in Chennai and Madurai.
Besides this we, other passengers, should extend our help to accommodate them when seeing boarding in the bus as many of us seeing on the other side though they see such persons.
On the other side, people with handicapped nature also do not want others to help them. One day in route of 12C in Chennai, I used to see three persons without eyesight are boarding in the bus at the five lights stopping. One day as the bus was with good crowd, when I saw one of them standing by my side, immediately raised from my seat and told him to sit. But to my puzzle he replied," I do not want your pity".

We must help the handicapped to our level best and what the author has indicated should be the appropriate needs from the government. However, it might be a costly affair for the different state governments to undertake the planning of specially designed buses for the handicapped. It would involve massive funds which might not be affordable to manage with the financial crunch.
While looking at the needs for designing such buses where there should be ample space to provide comforts to the handicapped persons, jobs are to be handed over to reputed firms having enough expertise in this line apart from their demands for the reasonable costs. The whole exercise needs both time and money. Even then the government cannot do much due to financial constraints. However, Railways can entertain the handicapped with the provision of special boggies.

" A rose is a rose" whatever name you call it.

Society had and still has various persons with different abilities and disabilities. While one may have some extra ability in some matter the same person may have disability in another matter. Even before the neo-coinage terminology were there also there were people with different abilities and disabilities. But they were always included among all others in the society. There was a person who used to do external jobs in my grandfather's house. He could not talk and hear also. But I used to wonder how my grandfather and he used to communicate each other using hands and mouth, in sign language and some sounds. He was so intelligent that he used to suggest alternatives on certain matters. He was virtually a caretaker when grandfather used to go outstation. He was treated as like any others in the village. And mind you! he used to joke and even gossip. So he was a sought after news media for the villagers.

I think it is only after the new coined terms and usage that these people were seen in a different perspective
Even normal people also need facilities. One who has tried to board and de-board private buses(even some KSRTC buses) in Kerala know how handicapped they are. The footboards ae kept so high that it is a trauma for elder women and senior citizen to board and de-board.

The present day cars are also not convenient. I recall old cars where we could open the doors fully out and it was easy and convenient to get in and out. But now car doors do not open full and it is very difficult to get in and come out. Nothing to say about the toilets in train.

So nowadays even normal people face lot of difficulties. In comparison the differently abled people have some better facilities because we now focus attention on them better than earlier. Let that be so and be better.
