Why durable rooftop solar power panels not popular among Indian homes?

Solar power has become undoubtedly a durable renewable energy source around the world. These solar panels have been installed for individual residential households and commercial as well. In India with abundant sunlight especially in the south there has been a gradual improvement in the solar panel installations. Apart from commercial establishments and some government builds, only a few urban independent residentials have adopted the rooftop solar power system.

Major inhibition is lack of awareness regarding financial and technical aspects of installing solar panels and grids. The households have a thought that installation and maintenance of rooftop solar would be a huge commitment even though they are affluent. They are not aware of the facts being cost effective in the long run, environment friendly, energy independence sourcing electricity credits, subsidies provided by the government, etc.

In terms of the durability, it is essential to check that the ceiling of the house needs to withstand the weight of the structure. In our country, most of the buildings have been so close in proximity. Neighboring buildings will affect the energy produced causing shadows to the panels installed.

Initiating more subsidies, home loans to install solar panels and quick processing from the government side along with public awareness is imperative in the growth of this energy conserving sector.

We have installed water solar heaters on our roof top and we get hot water from this solar heaters only. We use no other water heaters in our house. I have planned solar heaters also but Telangana government stopped giving subsidy. The cost without subsidy is very high. So I am in two minds. Still the matter is in discussion. In our office we have roof top solar power generating panels are already installed and 75% of our office requirement of power is generated .
The main reason for not using these solar power panels is of not having awareness among the people. The advantages of this power generation is not known to many of the people especially in rural areas. The governments should take actions to see that all the people are aware of the benefits of this system. There should be some good amount of subsidies so that people will easily opt for the same.

There are many limitation for solar appliances.

I am using solar lights since last five or six years. The first problem is there is almost nil aftersales service. There came many enterprises to sell solar lights and solar water heaters just to make use of the subsidy offered. Once their sales was over they did not care.
I my case, I installed a solar street light on my pathway from gate to my home. Though they advertised the cost as Rs5000/- it was when thy came for installing that I needed to incur more for fixture pole cementing etc. Then there was a problem that because of a taller building next, the solar panel was not getting sunlight sufficiently. Hence battery charging was not getting full and the light stopped after a couple of hours. Then I had to add another panel for solving the same. The total came to eleven thousand rupees. It worked for a few months. Then came the monsoon season and the charging was affected as most days it will be cloudy. To say least it failed within one year. The vendor company was also not traceable.
Then I purchased the Chinese make solar lights from online portals. As expected they also worked only for few months and stopped. Last year I installed a ne solar set using the same old panels with some addition and new battery. But the controller unit got damaged in lightning during rain season. It took months to get the same technician to set it right by putting a new controller set.
My friends use solar heater. Comparatively there problems are less. But the water loss is too much. We have to drain a lot before getting hot water.

To be frank solar energy is not at al cost effective; the return on investment is negative. It is not feasible in place like Kerala where rainy days are more than sunny days, where there is close residence buildings and shades from different sources. Moreover there is total lack of technical support and after sales service. Most of the products are still Chinese made and not durable.
