Introduce your favorite personality and let others guess- Identify the idol contest

We are now announcing another contest based on Partha's suggestion. Thank you, Partha.

At the outset, there would be two ways to participate. One would be to submit a write up on your favorite personality and the other would be for others to guess the person. It could be a well known personality from any field.

    What you have to do

    1. Submit a write-up on your favorite idol without mentioning the name or giving direct clues. It should not exceed 200 words. The write-up should be submitted as a response to this thread only. The best write-up will be selected on the basis of how discreet you have been about your idol. The challenge is to make the guessing process tough.

    2. Members other than the ones submitting the write-ups will have to guess the celebrity and send your guesses to sgisc2023@gmail.com . Please do not post your guess as a response to this thread.

    3. It goes without saying that all forum posting guidelines will be applicable here also.

    Prizes

    1. The best write up will receive a cash reward of Rs 75/-

    2. Then comes a cash reward of Rs 50/- for the second best entry. Consolation prizes may be considered depending upon the number and quality of entries.

    3. Five points will be given to each correct guess and the member who scores the highest will receive a cash reward of Rs 40/-

Be rest assured that all the valid participants will be suitably compensated.

The write-ups can be submitted till 10th Feb and we will accept the guesses till the 12th.

All members, including editors, are requested to participate and make this contest a success. Remember, it is not all about winning prizes only. Take it as an opportunity to test your writing skill.

I assume that we are required to submit our write-ups as responses to this thread.

Yes, Partha. The point has now been added to the thread for more clarity.

    My write-up:

The child was dear to the neighbours and relatives. He was an active child, but if some elders would tell him something, he would ponder over it seriously.

The boy liked his maternal uncle very much. He always tried to imitate his actions. The maternal uncle loved the child and used to fulfill his small wishes. But, one day, something unusual happened.

The boy visited his uncle's place accompanying his mother. He entered a room where his uncle kept his personal belongings. He started admiring various mementoes, trophies, caps and blazers. He got attracted to a particular white pullover with a V-shape and started taking it out from the cupboard.

Suddenly, his maternal uncle entered the room and asked him not to touch the pullover. He sternly told him: "Boy, this is India 'colour'. This cannot be purchased, this cannot be begged; this has to be earned through hard work".

The boy was initially astonished, but the words of his uncle forced him to think seriously.

He worked very hard and subsequently donned India 'colour'. He represented the country for a very long time and is still considered one of the greatest in the world.

    Who is he?

Should the personality be an Indian or internationally well known favorite one? I request the author to make it more precise.

  • #769331
Bhavani, internationally well known is also acceptable.

    My write up:

He was an educational reformer and politician. He had a good role in Indian independence movement also.
Apart from his political affiliations, he was much interested in forming the Indian scout unit and getting it international recognition. He took help from some of his contemporaries in achieving that.
For his exemplary services in the fields of education, journalism, scouts and guides programs, he was awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously.

    Guess who?

    Knowledge is power.

Thanks to Partha for suggesting this kind of contest and thanks to the admin too who has accepted it. However, I have a suggestion. Guessing work is never an easy task so at the end of the write-up, there have to be provided at least 3 clues, this will surely make the contest interesting.

Also, I would like to ask Saji if I write up on my favourite personality, how can I write without mentioning his/her name because I am not going to write up for guessing?

    My write up:

He loved music from his childhood and his father was also a singer. The boy used to dance to the tunes of his father. In his early age itself he lost his father. Because of his strong desire to learn music he went to a government music college. He used to go for begging for filling his stomach and fulfill his hunger. On some framed allegations he was sent out from the college. But one of the teachers who know him very well believed that he was not at fault and started teaching him music in his house. Later on he was proved not guilty and got reentry in the college.

With the help of a writer he entered in the field of movies and proved himself as the best singer in South India and even sung some songs in Hindi movies also. There are many private songs to his credit and they are equally popular. He has given performances in America, England, Germany etc. He performed in the United Nations Organization also. He received many awards and rewards. He is still in the memories of many people.

    Who is this singer.

    My entry is as follows:

The young boy since he was wearing a cap in faith of his religion had been detached from his childhood classmates to sit on the last bench by the new teacher. This happened while he was in his primary schooling that made him desperate. But later this issue of religious discrimination had been sorted out by the management tranquilly shifting him to the first bench to join his friends again.

While he was in his college, he outlined an aircraft design as a project but was rejected by the then professor intentionally to hold on the scholarship he was receiving. Humiliated again but not desperate at this time, he worked day and night to finish the project before the deadline and appraised as outstanding by the same professor.

Challenges made his life interesting and overcoming them to dream a big had been envisioned by him. Born in a middle-class family in the southernmost part, he has been hailed as a hero in India and an international celebrity as well.

Could you figure out this man of simplicity who is a role model and mentor especially among the youth and favorite for every Indian as of myself too?

Since it is mentioned that guesses can be sent up to the 12th, I assume that we can do so any time and not wait till all the writeups are submitted. Hence, I have sent my guesses of the four personalities that have been written about so far. I hope I get time to submit a write-up too, for this very good concept that Partha has come up with.

    My entry-

She dared to dream at a young age, despite the family's financial hurdles. She dared to dream despite failing the recruitment test twice. She dared to dream, despite gender stereotypes.

To fulfill her dream she gave up the small things, the long nails, the fragrant flowers in her long tresses, and then the tresses itself. To fulfill her dream she set aside a mundane job but did upgrade her English communication skills because of it.

She proved her mettle with her gutsy attitude during the hard training schedule and soared, especially during some of the toughest combat assignments that she was involved in, despite all the dangers. Unfortunately, due to certain policies, she could not continue in her distinguished career.

Guess this braveheart who fulfilled her dream.

    My write up
He was a charming boy living happily with the association of his friends in his school. All his friends were of different backgrounds receiving education in a Zilla School. He closely watched the ravages of poverty and good health care affecting their families
His father, though hailed from well educated family working as Chief Medical Officer under the government during pre Independence Day's was calculative of family expenses. Finally the family shifted from Dhaka to Kolkata.
With the Zilla School background, he completed his MBBS in 1964 from Calcutta Medical college and Hospital. He suffered a lot of health issues including retina haemorrhage causing his disruption of post graduation studies in medical.
He joined a municipal hospital in Kolkata and served for around 34 years and finally retired in 1998 but his zeal for rendering his services for the ailing humanity continued till 2018 and finally he could not continue any more due to his health issues. But still he enjoys the love and affection of the downtrodden classes for his proper diagnosis and patient hearing getting nominal fees for his consultation. He is still popular among this class.
    Guess this kind hearted doctor.

I am a big fan of heroin from the South of India who is very graceful and beautiful. Although she is in her mid-seventies, she looks young and ravishing. Many of her films were super hits. Two of the famous heroes of that era wanted to marry her and proposed to her. Her mother also wanted her to settle down in life with any one of them. However, as she was madly in love with an actor who was a married man with children and was much older than her, her family opposed her getting married to that man. But, amidst protests from her family, we went ahead and married the hero of her choice knowing very well that she would get brickbats from society. However, she maintained her dignity and never broke his family nor did she compel him to divorce his wife and live with him. She lived with her daughters separately. Her two beautiful daughters are married and have children and now live with their own families.

She is also an active member of a political party. This lady has too many feathers in her cap. She is an expert in various forms of classical dancing. She is a devotee of Lord Krishna. She was introduced by Raj Kapoor and was named 'Dream Girl' by him. Although she was rejected by a famous director of the South when she wanted to act in Tamil films, Bollywood welcomed her and made her quite successful. She still has great potential and will stay in the news for many years.

The person I adore is not because of having higher qualifications, talent and a pleasant personality, but in addition, the simplicity draws my respect and admiration. Possessing a combination of brain and heart has made the person renowned in both entrepreneurship and literature. This person became the only one among other students to join the college, topped in educational examinations, and the first in a professional career in India with sheer talent and extreme conviction. Humility and belief in philanthropy lead the person to multitask and is a great performer as a support system for an equally tech-educated spouse. Interestingly, the same person debuted in a Marathi film which was self-authored.

Admiration for the person mentioned above keeps increasing because of one's uplifting work for society. Believes instilling a love for books helps to ignite many young minds, and once a teacher by profession, so never fail to encourage them. A recipient of Padma Bhushan is a charming and impactful personality. Guess the person.
