Should we go for package tours when visiting places?

Since the terrorist problem in Kashmir is now under some form of check, particularly in Srinagar, thousands of tourists keep visiting that lovely place. One is told that the package tours are the best.

I tried to get a comprehensive quote from one such travel agency. This is a fairly good branded travel agency in Chennai, that has gained a reputation for being really true to whatever they offer.
There are other brands that are not so well known as a brand. However, the big brand is at least Rs.25 thousand costlier than what would happen if we book the hotels well in advance and also hire a taxi guy right from here. The difference is huge.

What is the experience of those who have been to Kashmir? Of course, the brand offers travel by Sedan and since the climate will be very good in the month of May. We are a bit confused as to whether to go with this travel agency or settle for a tour where we arrange everything right from the ticket booking. Well, there is every possibility of some discount through online booking as well.

A good quality package tour to any destination is generally costlier but it helps us in avoiding all sorts of hassles in arranging tickets and hotels etc. Package tours also come in different categories because depending on the level of hotels chosen, mode of travel, and food and other amenities during the travel and stay will significantly be different from each other.
Another important consideration is safety and security of the people travelling to other places. Presently Kashmir situation is quite under control but it was well known for the terrorist activities in the past and we do not know if all of a sudden something crops up and some evil activities happen in such places. The package tour operators have some good experience of all these things and they will get information about any local disturbance or any terrorist activity well in time and can take corrective actions for their trip. So many people prefer to visit Kashmir or any other such place in our country by package tour only.

Knowledge is power.

The advantages of the packaged tours are manifold- the first point being is the trouble free movement since operators would take care of every step involved in such a tour. In that way, our anxiety is reduced considerably and the other important aspect of such a tour is these operators are experienced enough to visualise the upcoming situations which the tourists might face due to unforeseen circumstances.
While talking about the tour of Kashmir region, we are not very sure when the situation might be vulnerable in respect of security due to political situations. Under such circumstances, they can handle the situations more effectively. Hence the packaged tours are more expensive than the ones opted from our ends. Hence in the given circumstances, it could be better to choose the packaged tour.

What I feel better is going up to Delhi for chennai on our own and from there taking a vehicle on hire and see all the places we want to see.
Once I visited some important places by booking a package tour. But I was not very happy. The places what they have listed only will be shown. We can't visit all the important places in the same destination. Hotles and food will be decided by them. Of course, quality will be good but you have no choice.
Next time, we were 6 people we all went to Delhi and there we booked an Innova. The driver is well aware of all the places. Where to stay and what to eat is our choice. We enjoyed that trip very nicely. Even small places in those destination were shown as per our request by the driver.
Then again we have a trip to other places in the same fashion and we enjoyed the trip a lot. Go to the nearest city on your own by flight or train and book a vehicle from there based on the number of members in your team.

Package tour is having its advantages. The first is cost. As the cost is hared, it will be quite less than tour by our own arrangements. Then there is time deadline and we may get to visit more places and points. In case of our own arrangement there is always chance of overspending at certain spots and not able to cover more spots. Then the ambience and feeling of being in a company of people makes the tour spirit. Sometimes we get some interesting people who can make the trip happier and cheerful.

However there are some disadvantages too. We may no get sufficient time at places we may want to spend more and in detail. We may not get choice in food and accommodation and privacy.

However package tour with an established and reputed travel/tour operator reduces our stress and avoidable efforts on various arrangements and nitty gritty and gives us time to spend happily and worry free as there is some one who takes care of all these.

( I would like suggestions from experienced members on visit to Orissa and Kolkata)
