What is the reason behind this decision?

All of us know that there has been a series of earthquakes in the border of Syria and Turkey. There have been extensive damages in both countries. As far as we know, more than 15,000 people have died in Turkey alone. Thousands of crores of properties have been destroyed by these earthquakes. Information from Syria is not fully available. But, from the media coverage it is clear that the hapless country and its people are being given stepmotherly treatment by many other Muslim countries. The reason behind this stepmotherly attitude is perhaps known to all.

Indian Government has taken active and quick steps and sent two NDRF battalions, specially trained dogs, a mobile 25-bed hospital, tools and equipment in Turkey.

Now, I have two questions. Has the Indian Government sent any relief to Syria? If not, why?

Secondly, considering the present uneasy (I am using mildest term) relationship between India and Turkey, is it prudent to help the country, especially during the current tenure of the present Turkish dictator, who has remained in the forefront of many anti-India diplomatic activities all over the world?

    Members, your opinion please.

Humanity above all else. While the majority of the help is to Turkey, yes, Syria also has received assistance with medicines sent to them.

I think on 7th night an IAF flight has taken six tonnes of Emergency Relief Assistance for Syria. Life-saving medicines and emergency medical items are there in this consignment. Syrian Ambassador in New Delhi, Bassam al-Khatteeb, thanked India for their timely help.
Another two Indian Air Force aircraft carrying an Indian Army field hospital for a 30-bedded medical facility reached Adana in Turkey. A team of medical specialists from Indian defence were sent there for helping the injured.
Irrespective of the relations India is having with Turkey, they decided to help the people there also. The assistance is based on the severity and necessity more than the relations they have with us. I appreciate the action of the government in this regard. Hope things will improve shortly there and normalcy will come back at the earliest.

Indian philosophy believes in helping others specially in the time of distress even if they had been our all time enemies. That is what distinguishes the Indian culture and tradition from other cultures in the world.
Another important thing is that as we all know that Mr Modi has lately emerged as a global leader and his acumanship is not limited to only India. Many countries are looking to him for guidance in many matters. Some others are looking to him for trade and business matters. It is obvious that a person of that calibre and reputation will show timely gestures in the matter of international relations and will help any community anywhere where there is a disaster happened recently and quick help is required. He will do it irrespective of whether that country is our friend or foe. The whole world is praising this step of India to help Turky and Syria in these difficult times.

    Knowledge is power.

India is a matured democracy. India has always stood for humanitarian principles. Our guiding principle is 'Vasudhaiva kudmbam".So help is our natural response when any country is sufferings. Even though the normal relations with some countries(governments) are strained or not as normal ,even then, when that country is suffering some natural calamities and its people needs help and aid, India will be doing its best to help the suffering people.
Then, regarding the priorities and order of despatch of help depends on logistics, other hindrances and international smooth transit ways. It needs support of other countries also.
In this case also, I read a news report that Pakistan denied its airspace to Indian planes taking help and aid to Turkey. So such many things need to be sorted out or alternates to be resorted.
Anyway as per some previous responses it is confirmed that Indian aid has reached both Turkey and Syria.

Though there could have been strained relationships between India and Syria on the ground of religious differences but this is not the time of thinking of such points. We should be come up with some helps so that they could identify our human attitudes. In that respect, it cannot be denied that we have sent medicines to this country on humanitarian grounds. The government can think of other measures very shortly.
Turkeys have received substantial help from our side including proper relief in terms of foods and emergency medicines. We are always committed to serving the ailing people irrespective of cast and religion.

Turkey and Pakistan might be suffering at this moment, but we must not think for a single second that their strategic goals against Greece, Cyprus and India have changed.

    Partha,

With reference to response #769455, what need is there to raise a fresh thread? This thread is about relief sent to Turkey and to Syria, so if there is an aspect related to it, surely you can discuss it here.

May I suggest- I think it is a good idea not to repeat others' text in double quotes every now and then. Why not just mention the response number and give your views on it? For example, you could have just conveyed your thanks to Dr. Rao for the information he gave. Why quote it? I can understand if it is one single sentence within a larger text that you wish to refer to, but even then, surely it makes sense not to repeat word for word everything. For example, how about if you just said that Venkisteswaran spoke about Pakistan denying airspace to Indian relief planes, and express what you have to say about it?

In today's international world, India became one of the important countries which have its own strong image. The best part is that India is not a threat to the world but a responsible country. During even covid, we have provided medicines and vaccines to many different countries and successfully achieved it in our countries as well. So, On humanitarian grounds, India will do what can be done to any country whether they are our enemies or friends.

To Partha #769455, you can write about something that exists or have some importance. What would you write about a country that has lost the trust of all over the world?

All said and done, I don't have much sympathy for Erdogan-led Turkey. We must keep a close watch on its activities. Diplomatically speaking, I think if we help Syria especially when it is little bit neglected by many other Muslim countries because of various reasons, it would pay us more dividend.

    This is my personal opinion.

We should, and do, help everyone in their hour of need. Diplomacy takes a back seat on humanitarian grounds. Why should the general citizens of a country suffer due to whatever diplomatic position their country has with other countries, including India?

It is heartening to note that there have been survivors, including babies, even after six days buried under the debris and rubble of uprooted buildings. Rescue teams, including those from India, have not stopped their attempts in searching for possible survivors. Hats off to every one of them!

#769540: Those general citizens are voting for fundamentalist, communal Erdogan term after term. They have been openly supporting Erdogan's one after another dubious steps, not only against India, but also against Greece, Cyprus and many other countries.

So what if some people vote for their country's leader, no matter what kind of leader that person is? Should they be left to die? Basic kindness to others in dire situations like this one goes a long way in restoring faith in humanity.

By the way, there are reports of the seething anger of the locals now against their President. They are furious at the late response to help in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, with disaster teams arriving much later, and the lack of drills to cut through heavy slabs to reach those who were alive under it. They are also angry that no provisions were made for those who survived to help them deal with the extreme cold. I read one report about a local making it clear that the President should not come around to ask for votes. Who knows; perhaps this terrible natural disaster will change the voting trend.
