Delhi Mayor Elections - AAP candidate wins

The news has just come in that after a peaceful voting process, Shelly Oberoi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, won the Municipal Corporation of Delhi election for the post of Mayor of Delhi, securing 150 votes. The BJP candidate Rekha Gupta secured 116 votes.

Shelly Oberoi is a first-time Councillor from Delhi's East Patel Nagar ward, having won the civic election last year. An alumni of Himachal Pradesh University, and a Ph.D. scholar, Ms. Oberoi was an Assistant Professor at Delhi University and is the Vice-President of the Delhi AAP's women's wing.

It does not seem surprising that AAP won, considering their firm footing in the capital city. Do you think this win will drastically affect the confidence of the BJP with the approaching Lok Sabha elections next year? Or it is just a small blip?

AAP is having a stronghold in Delhi and there are no signs of their wavering or weakening with time. In fact they are getting stronger day by day. There were some steps taken by AAP like reduction in electric bills, free travel to women in buses etc that made the common people happy and they became loyal to AAP. Another thing is that AAP is having a very aggressive marketing through TV and media and that is also paying them.
Municipal elections are different than the national level elections and we cannot extrapolate the victory of AAP here to that but they are a challenge for even BJP which has already emerged as a nationwide party in India and World is taking a note of it.
AAP is having a big following at least in Delhi and it will be a tough task for BJP to overthrow it.

The victory is as expected only. AAP is doing good work that suits people in our country. Many free offers are coming from the party to the people. So chances of becoming more strong are there. They are well placed in Delhi.
This victory will not have any impact on lok sabha elections, as far as my thinking goes. AAP is strong in Delhi but not on all states. They may get some seats in Delhi and in the other state where their government is working but they will not get any seats in other states.
BJP already knows about this possibile victory in Delhi. So there will not be any necessity to lose their confidence. BJP is strong in many states and becoming strong in states like Telangana etc. Of course, there are some states where BJP may not win majority seats but overall majority will be there to BJP only. Only Congress can give some fight to BJP if they organise well and go in a right direction.

Aam Aadmi Party has shown the people of Delhi how the government can be run with the efficient administration taking so many populist measures such as opening up buses for women folk, setting up Mohalla Clinics, tightening the administration of schools and hospitals. The people in Delhi are happy with the provision of relief in their electricity bills and even concessions are offered for the procurement of water. This party has identified the nerve of the common men in Delhi and to defeat this party in Delhi seems to be an impossible task for BJP.
Though the popularity of this party is picking up and the party is enjoying the confidence of the people gradually but it has to go a little deeper in other regions to influence the common men. Though the voting percentage in other states will firm up but it might not occupy the position of BJP in the ensuing election. However to be a strong opposition can arrest the monopoly of the running government and in that sense, it could be regarded as a welcome step.

Congratulations to Ms. Shelly Oberoi for winning the election for the Mayor of Delhi. This victory is significant due to the fact that she won in spite of efforts by the opponents to wrest the post with unfair means. The Supreme Court judgment in not allowing the nominated members to vote made it possible for the Aam Aadmi Party candidate to win without any disturbance. The nominated members have no right to vote was made clear by the Supreme Court judgment.

Just now, I have returned from my daily round of morning walk. There is a vat for wastes at a distance of around 150 metres from our residence. The vat has not been cleaned for more than 7 days. It is understood that the cleaners have not received payment due to the fact that the State Government of NCR of Delhi has not released fund for payment of salary. I hope the new mayor will sort this issue with the 'broom' (the symbol of her party). All of us hope she would be able to perform despite the fact that her party is in deep trouble on liquor-selling issue. Most probably, another AAP Minister is going to land in jail.

So far as BJP is concerned, sometimes setback is welcome. I hope that this minor setback would motivate all in the BJP and bring 200% efforts from party leaders, party workers and supporters to make a perfect 7/7 in the next Lok Sabha election in 2024. In 2019 also, the scorecard was 7/7.

Finally, I would remind others that in the MCD election in 2022, the AAP won only by a whisker, not because of any good work by AAP State Government, but only due to an anti-incumbency factor working against BJP, which had remained in power in MCD for 15 long years.

(Just another observation. Jha Sir, in his response, has mentioned Mohalla Clinics. If he comes to Delhi, I would like to request him not to mention these two words. This is a matter of ridicule for the AAP. Another 'ghotala' is brewing on this issue.)

More than the victory of the AAP candidates in the Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections, what I found more interesting was the intervention of the Hon'ble Apex Court in preventing a back door attempt by the BJP. The Supreme Court ordered the Lt Governor to notify the meeting of the Corporation within 24 hours and also decided against the claim by the Lt Governor who said that nominated members (we all know who) could vote in the elections. It is not only a legal victory but also a Constitutional victory.

Congratulations to Shelly Oberoi, the Mayor and Aaley Mohammad Iqbal, the Deputy Mayor! Hope they will perform well and rise up to the expectations of the people.

I agree that this election is unlikely to make any major impact on elections at the national level, but, still, it is a setback for the BJP. They had expected a sure victory for their candidate, isn't it?

What was appalling is the behaviour of the councillors from both sides in the House last night. There were physical blows exchanged, plastic bottles were hurled, and even ballot boxes were thrown. Absolute mayhem and hooliganism. Shame on all of them!

    Update:

Delhi councillor Pawan Sehrawat from Bawana quit the Aam Aadmi Party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. The leader alleged that he felt suffocated due to the corruption in the Aam Aadmi Party.

The announcement came after a few hours of the midnight chaos at the Delhi Civic Centre during the elections for the six members of the Standing Committee.

state assembly election or municipal election is totally different from the Loksabha election. People are now more aware of exactly what they want from the Lok sabha election and this is how they elect the Government in the centre. So far the current government is concerned, India is doing too well in all the quarters. Also, the opposition has no plan so far as to how they will win the next election. So, it won't affect BJP too much for the Lok Sabha election. As far as Delhi municipal election is concerned, All the best to AAP and good luck to them.

I concur with Saji Ganesh's views. This Mayoral election would have gone as a simple procedure and a natural sequence result for AAP as they had the majority numbers , But what made it a spoken matter was the attempt of BJP through Governor to interfere and hijack the mayoral election to its favour. So it is a defeat of BJP's moral stand- a hitting defeat it bought paying a price.

This has actually given AAP further breathing space amidst its suffocation from the fumes and fire it had created by its wrong and corrupt deeds. It was not at all worth for BJP(NDA) to have given AAP a big player image. BJP should have focused on national matters and in the next local elections AAP would have naturally faced difficulties due to its own misdeeds and corruption.

As I already predicted (#769799), the Deputy CM of NCR of Delhi, Shri Manish Sisodia, has been arrested by CBI in liquor-ghotala today afternoon. This will definitely affect MCD post-election scenario.

Since Manish Sisodia has been arrested by CBI authorities in connection with liquor scandals and this might cause negative impact the post election of MCD. Let us see how this event is viewed by Delhi Public.
