I also had similar problem, albeit to a lesser extent

Today morning, I read a bizarre news-item. A thirty-three year old married lady locked herself and her son at their Gurugram home for three years because she was terrified thinking that the 10-year-old would die of Covid as soon if he stepped out. The bizarre instance of 'Covid-induced paranoia' came to light a week ago when the woman's husband approached the police. Both mother and child have now been sent for thorough medical check-up.

NDTV news-portal has given the above information.

My mind went back to 2020. In July-August 2020. The continuous, unending rumour-mongering and fear-mongering by this NDTV and some other channels played a terribly adverse effect on my mental health. During this period, on 3rd August 2020, I lost my father. Although he left the world due to age-related issues, I could not meet him for the last time. This also affected me terribly. I almost locked myself in a room for more than one month. I could come out from the terrible state of mind after a lot of effort from my family-members and myself.

I hold NDTV and similar news-channels responsible for my mental state at that time.

And now, the same NDTV is telling that such behaviour by the lady is paranoia!!!

We have definitely passed through a traumatic phase in 20 - 21 when most of us were remained in the shocking situation. What the author has indicated is not the unusual one locking her son in the confinement along with her to save from the deadly virus of corona. We nourished bizarre thoughts that this disease would not spare in our free movement. Hence despite the fact that the entire families lent the genuine support to come out of the shocking position, the results were not very promising.
The author has rightly interpreted that he, too, had suffered from bizarre thought when his father left world due to the age related disease but his mind was occupied with the thought that his father might have been affected with corona. The mental condition was also affected with the displaying of corona cases in the different channels on those days.

It is true that media presents the news and other incidents in enlarged and enhanced form. Many people get affected by watching these things and a fear factor sets in which at times leads to disturbed mental condition. Different people have different mental power and such things do not affect everyone with the same intensity but yes many of our fellow beings were affected during the Covid times badly with these mental disorders.
In such times a great help is required from the family and friends and we also should take care that a person is not left alone in any case. When the warmth of family and friends is there then a person will not get any instability of mind.

India recorded 15 lakh cases of Covid in August 2020. This incidentally is the second highest number of cases recorded in any country during that month. The Government of India implemented a very severe lockdown during those days. All the news channels were full of news about Coronavirus cases. The continuous coverage made people stay back at home and survive the pandemic.
The isolated incidents where people locked themselves as reported by news channels were very few. The NDTV is no more with Prannoy Roy. It was the only channel that boldly criticized the Government in those days. Naturally, some people did not like that channel. Mr. Gowtam Adani is the major shareholder of NDTV at present and there may not be any criticism of the Government now.

In the name of awareness creation and exposures, the media (most of them) now a days peddle sensationalism, create a psychic fear in the minds of people and then exploit the same in some other way for their commercial success.
Media nowadays does exactly what it should not do. There are many takers for this also as commerce and profit has become the main dharma and goal for many in the present day.( Though not yet proved clearly, it is still doubted and feared by many that, it is the same profiteering interests who created the Covid virus and then tried to profit from medicine or vaccine and other caution materials. By God's grace, government's will, support of domestic medical industry and people, our nation was saved a lot from the bloodsucking cruelty of monopolistic multinational pharma industry and vested commercial interests.

    1. NDTV and some other media houses (The Wire, etc.) continuously (24x7) resorted to fear-mongering and rumour-mongering during those Covid days. These doomsayers and naysayers affected mental health of many Indian people. I still remember how one venomous NDTV snake was trying to put negative remarks in the speech of Dr. Randeep Guleria, ex-Director of AIIMS, who was trying to convince people to take Indian vaccines.

    2. Whatever the Central Government did, these venomous snakes (sorry, media-houses) found fault. When there was lockdown, these channels showed poor people dying on the highways. When there was no lockdown, they showed that people dying outside the hospitals.

    3. To create a negative propaganda against the Central Government, these snakes tried to project the then health minister of Kerala and arranged an award for her. They started talking about Kerala model. But when Kerala started suffering badly and the lady was thrown out from the state cabinet by Vijayan, the media completely forgot about the so-called Kerala model.

    4. Not even a single word of praise I heard about the almost-80 former health minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan or the current health minister Mansukh L. Mandaviya, who fought back with all their might, and have made India the most vaccinated country.

    5. Now, we understand the Chinese conspiracy. Now, we slowly understand how China terribly failed to control the virus which they themselves created. We come to know about the vaccine conspiracy of Pfizer. But no comments from these media-sharks on these issues,

    6. Finally, NDTV, which continuously preached doomsday and created extreme panic, is calling the behaviour of that hapless woman as 'Covid-induced paranoia'.

    What an irony!

I don't understand why Partha is so critical about the woman's condition being termed as paranoia. It was indeed her excessive fear about the Virus that had made her act in the way she did. The fear may have been induced or heightened by the reports from the media but when considering the fact that such reports did not induce such fear among all the people makes the case of this woman or some such rare incidents different. Facts can be ascertained only after the medical reports come and the mental history and psychology of the lady in question is assessed. And why point fingers at NDTV only when almost all the channels, except for a few which were inclined, either by choice or by force, towards the center were telecasting COVID related reports without any break?

During COVID, especially in the second wave, many people suffered and we have seen in Hyderabad shortage of hospitals beds with oxygen supply. There were incidents where people used to search for a bed in a hospital from morning to evening keeping the patient in the ambulance. When we see or hear such news definitely we will have fear and we will take all required measures so that we will be safe. In addition to that TV channels will be giving major importance to these news those days. My father used to worry a lot after seeing the news in TV. Then we stopped putting on the TV and stopped buying a newspaper so that my father will not get the news. He is now 90 years old.
It is the tendency of the TV channels to make give more and more sensational news so that their rating will be always good. But we should not rely on them completely. Many people used to stay inside the house only during that time. Definitely some people will be more fearful and overdo the precautions.

Every TV channel has shown only fear during covid except for some who showed some positive expect also even when COVID was at its peak. However, those who feel happy to see that NDTV is heavily criticizing the Government, for them, I must say one thing is that NDTV is always opposed to the central government no matter who ruled there. It is their propaganda to show India overall in poor condition even if the situation was not so critical. It was the same NDTV that was showing that India will be finished due to covid and the government cannot control the covid cases. But unfortunately for them whatever they had reported, just happened the opposite and India and the Indian government had won the battle with the Covid case when other countries who have fewer populations were still fighting to overcome the situation.

In 2020, we (my family-members) were physically safe and sound. My father left this world due to age-related problem (he was 90 years 5 months old at that time). But due to 24x7 rumour-mongering of NDTV, The Print, The Wire, The Quint and Anandabazar (in Bengali), our metal health became very poor. I had suffered from depression.

In 2021, we suffered from Covid. But we were mentally very strong. It was a peculiar situation. We got back to normal life in 3-5 days. Only my wife suffered for 7 days. But we remained assured that the vaccine was there.

I squarely blame those media-people for our mental state in 2020.

I strongly feel that the hapless lady in Gurgaon suffered from deep depression and locked herself and her child only due to incessant negative reporting by those media-houses.
