What is your take on studying History?

What is your opinion on taking up history as a subject to study either as part of an academic course or generally? Do you think it is really beneficial to study it?

History is a very interesting subject. By studying History a student can get a lot of knowledge and information regarding the past like which were the various tribes and communities living in different parts of the globe and how they were interacting with each other including the invasions and attacks by some of the ambitious ones on others. When we read about the wars, conflicts, and other confrontations which had happened in the past in various parts of the world then we realize how greedy countries or kingdoms invaded others and exploited the weaker ones.

By studying history we can learn a great deal. What is your take on studying History?

Learning history will tell us about the way of life of our forefathers. When we study the history of a country, we will understand how that country changed over a period of time. Who ruled, who did what and which king was good and cared for people etc., will be known by studying history.
The authors who are taking the responsibility of writing history, should do research and find out the facts and only facts should be presented. Otherwise, wrong information will go to the students and they will think that is the real history. It is the responsibility of the researchers in history to see that only facts will come out.
For me history is not a favourite subject for study. But I read history books to know the history of various countries and other places. I feel many of our epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagavatam are history books only and we all should read those books to know the importance of values based living.

Learning History of any country will reflect the culture in the different times and it must be read thoroughly to make ourselves acquainted with the culture being followed in a particular period. Apart from that we would know the life standards and economy prevailing over at those periods. However, while penning down History, the researchers should represent the facts and any aberration will lead to confusion among the mind of readers. To be familiar with the History of any country, it is always better to refer to more books so that missing some facts can be found in another texts so as to get overall pictures.

The hatred on studying History as a subject is normally find in students. There are huge difference in the books of History comparing to the same of 40 years back. In those days, we have to read the History in periods as before independence and after independence. Before Independence too Indian Kingdoms ruled by Moghals and others like this. The subject also we have to study in deep and to write the examinations well in deep. We used comment our tenth standard History Master as he give marks only by measuring the answers with his palm. But the value of studying history we learnt only when we find missing in the present students' books.

We get to know about the happenings in the past from the history books and to me it's quite interesting unless the study is for scoring marks. I never liked the subject during my school days because one has to study a lot and write even more to score good marks. That made the subject quite boring to me initially and I feel the books and the pattern of questions that we studied were repetitive. Maybe the topics could have been presented more interestingly.

One should have an idea of the past to deal with the present and in that sense, studying history is quite beneficial. We have developed a lot, and we have advanced in almost every sphere. Alas, greed and exploitation are still there in various forms. If we look at the wars and conflicts all around the globe can we conclude that warmongers never studied history or shall I say they failed to learn from history?

History is not just a subject about the past but very essential for the present and future, as well as it gets continually rewritten with every prominent political change in power. Everyone tries to leave a mark on history by changing and transforming history. Thus it becomes more essential to read history and correct history because distorted past leads to a distorted mindset and identity, and everything in society is about identity. Often people misunderstand history as a subject about just remembering dates and great deeds of great people, but there is much more to it. Everything we have today has a history; everything we conceive or perceive is shaped by its history and has an origin. Thus to understand anything, we first need to examine its in-depth history. I think history as a discipline can never lose its significance as it always works like a lesson for the present generation from the past generations not to repeat the same mistake that was committed in the past or at least to minimise it. As famous philosopher George Santayana said, those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.
