I hope most of the members would be able to answer these two puzzles

    First:

I was born in Patna. But came to a bigger city for education. Completed medical education despite having terrible financial hardship. Became one the topmost doctors of the country. I also joined the freedom movement, but at the same time, acquired valuable administrative experience even in that British era.

After independence, I became the chief minister of a terribly problem-ridden state. I tried my best to solve those problems, and changed the state a lot during my chief minister-ship of fourteen years. I also received Bharat Ratna in my lifetime.

As a young doctor, I had fallen in love with a beautiful and educated girl who was the daughter of another very renowned doctor, but the doctor had refused to accept me as his son-in-law. So, I remained bachelor throughout my life, but later I made the name of my lady-love well-known. It would be almost impossible to forget her name by people of the state where I became chief minister.

Who was I? And, who was my lady-love?

    Second:

I was born in a small village of Bengal (now West Bengal). But when I was very young, my father shifted his base to Kanpur. At a very young age, I joined the revolutionaries operating in the United Province (now Uttar Pradesh) and Panjab. I landed in British jail along with Bhagat Singh. I fasted in jail for a long period for not getting basic amenities inside the jail.

Although I was released from jail after a very long time, I was not allowed to move freely. I was banned from entering Panjab and Bengal. Later, in 1942, I again took part in the 'Quit India' movement. I was again arrested. Due to terrible torture, fasting in jail and poverty, I started suffering from tuberculosis.

After independence, people forgot me. I tried to settle in Bihar and even became a bus-conductor to run the family. Ultimately I left the world in abject poverty.

    Who was I?

We know that. But I participated with an interest. This made us to refresh our knowledge and let me know about some freedom fighters who struggled for our independence. This is a chance to learn.

Venkiteswaran Sir: Our great nation has produced thousands of well-known, lesser-known and unknown freedom-fighters who sacrificed their life, liberty, career, family and sometime education for the sake of Mother India.
During the first 75 years of independence, we have learnt only about one one or two person(s) or family(-ies). Many people think that only one man or two people brought independence 'bina kharg bina dhaal' (in a non-violent way).
After seventy-five years, now it's time to tell our next generation the true history of India's freedom movement. We must exchange information, stories and anecdotes of lesser-known and unknown freedom-fighters. We must use net to find out who were they and share the information.
We have to teach history in proper perspective for the sake of the next generations.

@ Partha #769876, I understand you. I also concur mostly with your views about the gap of information caused by lopsided or one sided designed education syllabus since Independence years.

I have received responses from Jeets, Dr. Rao Sir and Jha Sir. Venkiteswaran Sir said that he found out the correct answers, but he did not submit the replies as he found out one answer from the Net.

Now its time to announce the correct answers:

    1. (a) Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy
    1. (b) Kalyani (Daughter of Dr. Nilratan Sircar)
    2. Batukeshwar Dutt

    (a) Jeets has answered the third one correctly (Batukeshwar Dutt).
    (b) Dr. Rao Sir has answered all the three questions correctly.
    (c) Jha Sir has submitted the first and the third answer correctly.

Long back, I wrote a Forum post on Batukeshwar Dutt. Most probably, the title was 'Nobody knows about him at that place." Many members read this post and commented iupon it (including Dr. Rao). Unfortunately, I can't find it now although I am trying to find it out for last three days.

Thank you Partha for announcing the results and I am happy that all three of my answers are correct, I remember your post on Batukeshwar Dutt. Many such people are not finding a place anywhere in the history of the freedom struggle for our country. Thank you for your contest which made us remember an unsung hero after a long time. I wish you continue your good work.
