Go on short trips to the neighboring States

A small discussion as to what to do during the forthcoming summer holidays recently happened in a group of senior citizens. The group consists of those with rather fixed incomes and very little variable income.

One of the more articulate senior citizens came up with a good suggestion. For example, while he is in New Delhi, he would plan a short trip to Jaipur, which he had seen long ago. To cut down on cost, the booking is by the sleeper class on the train. Furthermore, he and his wife would stay in ordinary accommodation, and since most of the day would be spent visiting the neighboring places, he would be able to minimize his budget travel expenses.

Well, he did have a message. Time is not a constraint, but timing is. The last week of March has been chosen for his trip, and according to him, the scorching summer would not have even started.

This is exactly what should happen. We can find small joys by living within our means and also enjoying life to some extent. We just do not have any choice either, if we do not want to depend on our children for any of our needs.

So, let us learn from some good ideas, at any time.

Going for a short trip to various places in our country and even to other countries if our finances allow us is a a good choice. It is better if we visit at least two places in a year it will be good. Based on our budget we can plan our trip. Only thing is that we have to plan the trip very well in advance so that the itinerary for the trip will be ready with us so that we will have hassle free trip. We can go in sleeper class and we can stay OYO rooms and local transport can be public transport. All this can be planned once you decide how much money you want to spend on that trip.
I agree with the author that when we have some fixed income even after retirement also, we need not depend on our children and we can live on our own with our spouse and plan our activities. So we all should save some money during our service period and see that the interest that we get from those savings can take care of our expenses.

Some people feel that by spending more money more happiness and joy can be obtained in one's life. But it is not true. One can have joy and happiness even by spending less money by planning properly and living within ones means as the author has also mentioned in detail in this post.
I remember one incident when I was doing my PG course in a town away from my home town. Most of us were living in small rented rooms and managing our monthly expenses within the amount that we were getting from our parents every month. We were living as minimalist. One day one of our friends suggested that we should enjoy a picnic in the nearby place where we could go on foot. We planned it on a holiday and arranged a few basic utensils and other things like match box, sugar, salt, semolina, eggs, drinking water etc and went to that place. It was winter time and we collected some wood branches fallen on the ground and made a village style stove by keeping two big stones aside and then put a pan over it and lighted the dry branches below using some dry grass and matchstick. It gave a lot of smoke but it was manageable and we could prepare some dishes as per our little skill in the matter.
We had a great fun and per head expenditure was minimum possible. It is also a fact that at that point of time none of us could afford more than that.

    Knowledge is power.

Does summer vacations really mean something special to senior citizens who are leading a retired life? I doubt. It might mean special for the students or for the parents who might have to plan a vacation alongside the holidays of their kids or may be for senior citizens who are expecting a visit by or have plans to visit their wards who are staying away with their family during the vacation of their grand children. That being the case, I think senior citizens can plan a trip at any point of time keeping in mind the distance, weather, financial condition, health etc. And why go to nearby states only? They can plan according to their pockets. One can even plan a trip to some serene tourists spots within your state also. It again depends on one's interest. Not all the senior citizens would want to move around. So, if one is interested and if money and health permits, go around, have a good time and feel relaxed and rejuvenated and get back to your houses afresh.
