Arming children with good information is the need of the hour

The plus two students in most places are always a confused lot. The craze for engineering education is as good as gone. There are too many new careers.

However, being totally informed is now vital. We need to take our children to trained counselors if need be. There cannot be a situation where they are not informed well. Particular professions demand a set of skill sets and competencies. For example, to become a good serial actor on television, male or female, one needs a good personality and a good gift of the gab. The power to articulate ideas is a must. One should also be an extrovert.

Similarly, a career in journalism needs the power to face any challenge and the will to take on the mighty as well. Investigative journalism is likely to come back with full vigor, within a year or two and one needs to be very knowledgeable about current affairs as well.

A career in sociology is advised for those who have a big taste to understand and interpret social trends. One necessarily has to do up to the doctorate level in India and follow it up with a postgraduate degree abroad.

The list goes on. Visiting some career fairs at this point in time can also help.

An apt suggestion from the author. The scenario is changing. Traditionally degrees and diplomas are no longer that lucrative. Specializations and micro specializations in the subject are coming. We used to study chemistry as one subject. But there are many specialization in chemistry and these specializations are becoming vital for having a good career.
But fortunately, the internet is providing a lot of information to the student community about these new developments and new career paths. So students are getting very good information and based on the information, they are making their own plans. However parents role here is very important. After completing intermediate or 12th class, the students will be in a confusion. At that juncture parents can place the information before them and see that they will have full clarity on the subject. That will help them to select their education path so that they will have a good career.

The days of only having access to careers in the government, medicine, engineering, and education are long gone. There are countless employment alternatives available nowadays. Even a simple Google search would yield countless results depending on your level of interest. The variety of careers out there and how they are not constrained may surprise you. It extends as far as our imagination can imagine.

Youngsters should not only be exposed to professional information found at career fairs or in the media. Several doors will open up as a result of study based on interest and discussion.

The author is correct. As many children indulge themselves with mobiles and computers, outing possibility is considerably reduced or nil in many cases. No parents takes them out on many reasons. But I used to take brother's daughter to shopping, temples, museum, library etc. That too on the way I used to tell about the names of trees and flowers etc.
In house also we can sit with them and see 'Animal Kingdom', 'National Geography'channels.

Today there is a big unemployment in our country and the efforts for getting a job or making a career are becoming more and more difficult day by day. In this situation the students have to be very alert and aware about the career options around them. The days have gone when engineering or medical or administrative services were the only aim of the students. Today skill has become an important factor in getting a job and the student must understand that there is no job big and no job small. Sources for livelihood are to be ascertained first and then only one has to jump or switch from one job to another by acquiring additional skills or experience in a particular area.
Parents have to play a big role in this environment because if they do not guide the children properly and make efforts themselves to know about the changing environment then how the children will get the ideas and clues related to employment and job opportunities.

    Knowledge is power.

The rate of unemployment has increased significantly due to less availability of opportunities for the engineers or technical people. In the earlier days, the parents insisted on their kids for choosing either medicines or engineering and with the sustained efforts of the students, they were able to land jobs in their chosen areas. Then there was the demand for the management courses of reputed institutions such as IIM, Xavier Institutes and other top B class management schools but the fact is there is near saturation in this line.
Now the students have to look around the other areas where they can match perfectly to land in the appropriate jobs such as Data Scientists, Web Development Managers, Journalists etc for their better career paths. They should be fully familiar with the appropriate skill sets needed for such jobs. If needed, they should not hesitate in consultation with the councillors to have their guidance. Alertness and sharp focus of the latest tools are essential to maintain their enhanced employabilities.
