Reading books is getting replaced by listening to audio books and podcasts

Reading is to the mind what food is to the body. The moment we stop giving food to our body, the impact is slow, but it is clear it starts to drain our energy. Our body starts to feel weak; similarly, when we don't give our mind good reading and hence learning, our mind slowly starts to move towards draining and weakness.
In today's generation, where each book and material is available online in video format, audio lecture people are avoiding reading to the extent that they often think it is better to listen to an audiobook than to read to save time.
This kind of saving time ultimately has no utility in the long run because when we read books ourselves, it keeps us engaged, gives us the opportunity to find our own interpretation, enhances our vocabulary when we struggle to search its meaning and opinions and thus food and energy to our brain.
Technological advancement, on the one hand, has made life easy and saved time, but on the other hand, have ruined our own capabilities and our trust in our own abilities. Children these days find a shortcut to everything on the name of smart work, and one such smartwork has become avoiding reading and listening to someone who has already read it. When I was a kid I used to have a lot of books to read in my free time story books, moral science books even cartoon magazines. Today all these things are replaced by smart gazettes, soon time is not far ahead when this generation of newbees will not be able even to read. Thus we need to enhance a reading culture by engaging the new generation in books and old-school methods.

There has been a paradigm shift in the ways we now read the information and other things in our lives. We never thought that a time will come when we will be able to listen to the books rather than reading them. It is an amazing advancement of the technology and it is benefiting many old and disabled persons to a great extent.
The difference between these two modes of reading is that in the conventional method our eyes were focused on the print and it required some concentration to read that and absorb the material by our minds. But in the listening mode what is happening is our eyes are free and only we are using our ears for the purpose of assimilation of this type of reading. When eyes are free then naturally they can distract here and there and do their jobs as per their own wish. But as eyes and ears are coupled to the same mind so during listening to a book there can be some distraction caused by eyes moving in all directions. It will be a topic of discussion whether a child should be discouraged for listening mode of reading or encouraged for reading the print books but in my opinion in their early age they should be first exposed to the print media and later if it is convenient for them they can switch to the listening mode also so that they know the comparative strengths of both the modes.

    Knowledge is power.

Technology is developing and new ways and means of acquiring knowledge are coming. In earlier days when we want some information, we used to go to the library, take the book and search for the book and then read. But now there is no necessity of going to the library and opening a book. You can just google it and the required pages will appear on the screen. You can select and read. Slowly the necessity of reading is going away. You can hear when somebody reads it. But our own reading will give us a better understanding of the material we are studying. That process of hearing will be useful to blind people.
A person who really wants to get a good understanding of the material that he is studying should read it. While you read you will be paying much attention to the information you are reading and that will help you to get more and more insights into the subject you are reading. So, I think one should not give up reading forever.

We have had different patterns in the learning process in the school days. Our teachers were convinced ( and that is true) that learning process process is incomplete unless we read the texts of the books with full attention. This process is the summation of reading, thinking deeply the motives of the author and its final assimilation in our brains.
These days the students are smart enough how best they can manage time effectively to secure impressive marks in the examinations. Hearing could be the substitute of learning but the retentivity might not be permanent escaping the rout of reading. Hence we must encourage the young generation to instil their reading habits.

Yes, reading books is being replaced by audio books and podcasts. But are these electronic devises creating the same impact? Do these technology-driven substitutes give same type of satisfaction which is provided by the books? These are the questions which create confusion in the minds of old-timers like me.

Yes, I agree with the author. Nowadays Reading books is getting replaced by listening to audiobooks and podcasts. It is easy to listen to a book or podcast instead of reading a book. Many apps are available in the Google Play store to provide you with audiobooks. These types of apps also provide discounts for users.

You can listen to a book or podcast by doing your routine work. I also use some apps which provide a full audiobook or a summary of books.

    Honesty is the best policy.
