Come on! Let us share some household tricks and tips

There are a variety of tasks in our house related to the kitchen, electrical connections, handling gadgets, mobile charging, etc. We also face many problems during the execution of work in our house and to cope up with them we use certain tricks or tips and make work convenient. There are also some safety precautions or simple precautions to keep away ourselves from any untoward incident.

I am presenting this thread as a fun cum learning activity where we can share our experiences regarding the various jobs that we undertake in our houses and share tips and tricks with each other. I request members to share 2-3 tips as a response to this post and I hope we will learn a good deal of things through those responses.

To start with, from my side a few tips -
    1. Keep big cotton cloth pieces handy in the kitchen as they are very useful for cleaning water or any liquid that gets spoilt on the kitchen slab or other places.
    2. If the clothes are not much dirty, then use the minimum time cycle in the washing machine to save on water and energy.

While handling household jobs, alertness is the important factor. We need to arrange our priorities in such a way that both fuel and time could be saved with the observation of some sequence. The vegetables need to be cut in size and all other ingredients are accessible to us without wastage of time and gas fuel.
Once the cooking process is finished, we must ensure that it is properly covered to protect them from flies or other insects. The best way would be to take up cooking one hour before the meal timings so that we can enjoy the same in fresh conditions.
It could be a tough time to arrange the books of the kids which could be found at any place inside the house and is often mixed up with the books of their sisters and brothers. The parents should be watchful to avoid such mixups.

    1. Covering books with some bamboo paper or some glazed paper helps in keeping them in good shape for a long time.
    2. While going out of the house stop at the main door for a while and try to remember whether you have kept everything needed like maybe driving license, Aadhar card, any document, money or card, spectacles, diary, mobile phone etc.

Make a vessel with Thermocoal with an air-tight lid. The heat retention capacity of this material is very high. The size should be sufficient to accommodate the rice cooker we use to cook rice. While cooking rice in the rice cooker, stop the cooker just when the water starts boiling and transfer the cooker into the vessel made of Thermocoal and keep the lid in place. The rice will get cooked in half an hour and it will be ready to heat. By doing this your power consumption for rice cooking will come down.
Many of us will be using RO water purifiers in our houses. The percentage of wastewater generated in these units is very high. If we throw it out, the wastage of water will be high. So collect that water in a bucket or in any other vessel and use the same for vessel cleaning or floor cleaning so that there will not be any wastage of water. Even we can use this water for our bath.

Sometimes when we are working in the kitchen we find that some items are used up and are to be brought from the market but later we forget it. So it is suggested to keep a small slip book in the kitchen itself may be hanging on one corner along with a pencil or pen and then we should note down the items there itself so that later we can take that list to market.

DR.N.V. Srinivasa Rao in hs respone #770246 above has stated : "Many of us will be using RO water purifiers in our houses. The percentage of wastewater generated in these units is very high. If we ..................................... collect that water in a bucket or in any other vessel and use the same for vessel cleaning or floor cleaning so that there will not be any wastage ...........................".

I totally agree with him. I was practicing the same till a couple of years ago. Then with a suitable adjustments my RO water purifier became a 'Zero water wastage' purifier. Here they made a small adjustment by which the waste outlet water is again recirculated at the input point. As my input water is only soft well water, there is no extra salt in the input including the recycled water. Now we are happy that there is no water wastage. Otherwise, depending on the hardness of the input water and the output threshold the water wastage can be much.

Until your RO filer is converted to a zero water wastage one, it is suggested to catch the waste water form RO purifier and use it for all non-drinking, non-cooking purposes.

    Nice information provided by Venkiteswaran.

When we go out for a long time then we can put sealing tape on the sides of doors or windows from where dust enters. Also, we can cover the furniture and other items with old bedsheets and protect them from dust.

As we do not have practice of drinking anything by sip, we use the coffee/tea tumblers to give other family members in order to reduce the loading sink with vessels. However, I used to wash my coffee/tea cups immediately after drinking coffee/tea without dumping into sink.

Similarly when we sit for eating we used to take water, oil, salt, curd/buttermilk, pickles without expecting others and this will reduce our house ladies also for better serving.

My suggestion is to have a small cloth bag or jute bag in hand whenever we go out. We can keep a pen, house key in that bag and can be used to put bus ticket, balance coins or notes in order to avoid taking purse outside in public place. Moreover we can use the bag to carry any items we bought unplanning but seeing on the road. If we keep this as a practice we will not forget anything and we will not miss anything.

Definitely, keeping important things in a pouch and taking that with us while going out is a very good habit and also a good tip making our day convenient.

    Another tip:
Sometimes we do not want some small holes in the wall which were made earlier for hanging some item. Take a small amount of white tooth paste (non-gel type) and push it in the small hole in the wall.

We are calling mechanics for repair of various gadgets in our houses and we keep their phone numbers stored in our mobile phones. Some of these technicians are very good while some are satisfactory or some might not be so good in their work. When we have a good number of these technicians then we don't remember who was good and who was not so good. It makes sense to write a word like excellent, good, or satisfactory along with their names in the contact list in our mobile phones.

Do not use a dry and rough cloth for cleaning the mirrors or polished surfaces in the house. Instead, use a slightly damp cloth which will not only remove the dust but will also not scratch the fine surfaces.

If we want to place a nail or screw in the wall for hanging a picture or painting then before we hammer it we should affix a small thick piece of adhesive tape at that point so that while hammering the nail the paint on the wall does not crack.
