How to adjust yourself to a new city?

Changing a city or leaving a place where you lived for so long is always a difficult decision but it is part and parcel of life when we grow up to move from one place to another place.
It may be due to work, education or sometimes marriage. The hardest part is to adjust oneself to new realities and ways of life in a new place. We often start to have a comfort zone where we live and leaving that comfort zone is very hard but it is a necessity as well. Often you end up missing the old place so much that yous start to live in nostalgia than in the moment you are in, you try to find the old faces you left in the old city in the new city.
As it is often said that a place becomes what it is because of the people you are with at that place, and when you lose such things it becomes difficult.
What do you think is the easy way to cope with the feeling of loneliness, nostalgia and old memories in a new place?
As we move on in life we leave a part of ourselves in the places we leave, is it possible to get new parts without feeling hurt and pained? How long do you think it takes for a person to adapt to a new city and place?

Defiitely copping up with a new city is a prime issue to any person. Even it is for a casual visit many of us feel bad to cope up with the new circumstances and it is because of their expectations and non-adjusting charecter. We should make up our mind to adjust the new place even for a specific period or permenant before moving there.

Even for children the accompanying parents or elders should tell them before going to a new place that adjustments are inevitable. If we tell them before itslef, the children defenitely cope up with the situation.
It is not a simple matter but the adjusting or making ourselves suitable to the place is really an important matter. In our house we would got practiced or made our childrent to get practiced to sleep with Air condition, but we cannot expect aircondition in the house where we are going.

Mr. Manian, a famous Tamil writer, who went all parts of the world and wrote books on his travel used to mention about the food as major item. I faced it and realized his writings when I went to many parts of our country. ONe day I happened to meet him in person in the house of our Advocate and I told this to him.

I have been practice of taking only pure vegetarian food but have seen almost in all cities in all over India, only hotels or restaurents containing both vegetarian and non vegetarian foods. I used to search well for a pure vegetarian hotels and got in all places and I do not mind about the size of the restaurents and food type.

When I went to Ahmedabad first time I took meals in a hotel, of course, pure vegetarian, but containing all items mixed with some sweet. When I planned to finalize simply with curd and rice, the server put a vada and a big spoonful of sugar in the cup of curd (that was their practice to eat so). By seeing my difficulty the hotel person in the cash counter suggested to go to another restaurent where I could get some normal food.

Similarly when I went to Chandigarh curd was not available to add in rice when I took meals in a hotel. But I managed as curd rice with katta lassi.

But really it is a challange one one to taste different type of foods in different places.

We have an inherent resistance for any change whether it is change of place or change of our house or change of our friends or change of our surroundings in any respect. Many people have a fear of change because it forces us to take some measures and precautions in our new environment in the changed scenario or changed place.
When we move from one place to another than many things come in our minds. We have to locate a house for living in the new place. There are many facilities that we are enjoying in our present place like water and electricity connections, gas supply, maintenance of house, availability of servants etc and all those things we have to install in the new place which itself is quite cumbersome process. Then comes the society and friends and relatives which we are leaving back in our earlier place and we have to raise those relationships in the new place. Another thing is that every place has a cultural background and there are local languages and local traditions and conventions which become a part of our lives when we live therr for a long time. Now when we move to a new place then all these things will be changed to some degree or maybe completely and then it is a real challenge to cope up with that and bring our mind set in harmony to the new place and its rules, regulations, and traditions. India is a big country and there are many languages spoken here and many cultures are coexisting here so the change of place will have a mark from all those elements and one will have to seek solutions and resolutions for the same.
I have a very good experience of moving from one place to another and during my active service life I had been in the states of UP, Assam, Tamilnadu, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. That had given me a great exposure to different places and different cities where I lived for quite sometime ranging from 4 to 10 years. Every time it was a big disturbance but we had to manage and generally it takes a few months time to settle in a new place.

    Knowledge is power.

A known devil is better than an unknown ghost. This is what we all believe. The place where we are living for a long time will appear better always when compared to a new place. We will be always comfortable with our own house. I think this is the attachment we will have with that place and house that will make us feel like that.
We adapt and adjust to a place by changing our attitude and style and start feeling comfortable. By any chance, if we have to leave the place and move out. we will be thinking about the new place and the conditions there. Again we may have to put in a lot of effort to get adjusted to the new place. It may take some time and till such time we will be very shaky and we feel inconvenient. But over a period of time, we will get adjusted to the new place also. An initial warm-up period is required. Many people change jobs within the same city.

Food, language and people's attitude -in that order of priority are the factors which affect us in a new place. The more comfortable and convenient these, the faster we adjust to the new place.

It will be very difficult to adjust to a new place where the food and language are totally different and uncomfortable to you from your habits and experience. But if they are similar or more nearly resembling to your own food habits and language, then it will be easier to adjust. Even if these two ae okay, if the attitude of the people around is not friendly and favourable then also it is difficult for us to be comfortable in the new place, especially when you have to stay there for long.

Till now in all the new places I stayed, language was not a problem as either I was able to manage in the local language or there was a common language which I can speak and communicate. The foods which I am habituated and comfortable were also available , and slowly I could also adjust with some local foods also, as they also confirmed to my principles and tastes.

I concur with the views of DR.N.V. Srinivasa Rao in the response above. I especially support the statements : "We adapt and adjust to a place by changing our attitude and style and start feeling comfortable." Thus it will appear that
'a known devil is better...and a known place will feel better than and unknown place.

But there is always a thrill and challenge in exploring new ways and new places.

We are tuned to the place where we are living and by chance we need to have a shift due to transfer in the service or otherwise from the present location, we would move with our heavy hearts. The other aspect which might be inconvenient as a result of move from the present place could be in terms of food, transportation and the other locations such as vegetable markets, stationary shops etc. Of all the considerations, we could loose our friends which were our source of joy while living over there. In the case of shifting, this could be a painful situation.
The new locality in other cities could take considerable time by way of adjustments.
