    Landlord versus Tenant (First Story)

Young painter Gagan Paul used to stay in a rented flat in South Calcutta. He felt he was the Paul Gauguin (the famous French post-impressionist artist) of India, but very unfortunately, people didn't think so. No one used to buy his painting. As a result, our young Gagan Paul could not pay the rent of his flat.

The owner of the flat started to ask for rent from India's Gauguin, but his demand was ignored. He started to threaten the artist, but even then, the young artist ignored the threat. Finally, one day, the flat owner asked Gagan Paul to vacate the flat immediately.

On that day, Gagan somehow managed to have a nice drink at his friend's place. He was enjoying the after-effect of the drink and was in no mood to quarrel with the flat owner. Very seriously, he said to the flat-owner: "Please note that after twenty-five years, people will visit your house and say that famous artist Gagan Paul used to stay here".

The flat-owner replied more seriously: "No, not after twenty-five years. If you don't pay the rent right now, tomorrow morning people will say that the rascal Gagan Paul used to stay here."

It is really unfortunate that a skilled artist like Gagan Paul could not make a livelihood and his paintings were waiting for the customers all the time. It is obvious that if Gagan Paul doesn't pay the rent of the house then the owner can get it vacated if not by himself then through the legal proceedings.
This story has brought out many facades of life of the people living in the society. These people are having some sort of skill or knowledge of fine art but there are no buyers for their work. Normally when an artist is not able to sell his work then he has to go for some other work for making a livelihood but this artist that is Gagan Paul was not interested in anything else other than painting. That is where he is lacking and he is suffering.

    Knowledge is power.

Here there is no reason for us to find fault with the house owner also. He is having every right to ask for the rent and the tenant should try to pay him or should ask for some time for clearing the dues.
If the skill I have is not making me earn my bread, I should try some other way for that. But Gagan did not try
anything other than painting. That created a problem for him. People will forget everything. As of now, Gagan may be a rascal but after 25 years he may become the world's greatest painter and people allover the world may facilitate him. We don't know as of now and the author also has not given any clue for the same.

Your story shows that skills may not always be easy to sell, whereas land and houses can provide a more reliable source of income. In today's materialistic age, people often judge a person's worth by their wealth, rather than their skills or character. As a result, society seems to be losing its sense of compassion and kindness towards those who are less fortunate. I have observed that many skilled individuals struggle to make ends meet, while others who may not have received a formal education are able to earn a good living through various means and are content with their lives.

A good story but want to know what happens after that. The story is incomplete. But some points I want to share here. First of all the artist must pay the rent on time as he has rented the house. If he is not able to pay he can request the owner for more time to pay the rent.

Practical the owner of the flat is not wrong. He has the right to collect the rent from the artist. But he cannot use illegal means to collect the rent.

But I know what happens after that. Mr Partha K, please complete the story in second part.

    Honesty is the best policy.

A wonderful story, Mr Partha, I am curious now, have you published any book with a compilation of short stories? I would love to read them, if you haven't published, would you consider publishing?

I have gone through all responses received so far.
My first observation: Why, oh, why most of the members of ISC are always so serious? Don't they enjoy and smile?
My second observation: The famous French artist Paul Gaugain could not attain fame during his lifetime. Due to acute poverty, his wife and children were forced to leave him. His paintings started getting recognition at least ten years after his death.

#770417, so why this thread? Did you intend initiating some discussion or was it just meant to share an actual story? What was the purpose behind coming up with this thread?

Neethu Madam (#770412): My readers will have to wait for another 4 years and 9 months. God willing, I will get the coveted status of senior citizen by that time. Then I will publish my worthless musings and try to follow the footsteps of 'The Dirty Old Man of India'.

From the response of Saji Sir, I am very sure that he hasn't ever enjoyed Husband-wife jokes, Drunkard jokes, Doctor-patient jokes or Landlord-Tenant jokes.

    Feeling sorry for him!

Partha, I asked for a simple clarification. Provide it if you can instead of playing your usual deflection card.
I have read and heard lot many jokes and I do enjoy jokes. So, leave that aside. My query at #770418 is clear and I want an answer.
After reading your response above, I am in doubt whether you were trying to share a joke or was trying to play a joke on our members.

Alright Mr Partha but we should give credits to our writings, if we ourselves consider them worthless, it doesn't matter what others value it. Give credits to your writings Mr Partha. Never say "worthless".

Also, you can desist from calling me "Madam". (If this platform had a smiley I would have put this :D)

Saji Sir: There is another respected member of ISC who occasionally post jokes on varied topics. How do you react to such posts? I hope your reaction will be similar in case of jokes posted by me.
I will post another two jokes on this topic (Landlord-Tenant) very soon. Please try to enjoy these jokes, if possible.

Partha, yes, our member Ramachandran does post jokes occasionally but one can easily understand that they are jokes even if it is not specifically mentioned. Just go through the responses above and try to realize whether any one of them has understood that you have posted a joke. I think jokes need not be told as a story but should be crisp and precise. You are welcome to post jokes occasionally (occasionally) but please step out from your usual style of writing so that you need not have to explain later that what you have posted is a joke.
