Partha, how much improvement have you noticed?

Many of us (including me) joined India Study Channel (ISC) with the hope of improving our English knowledge. All of us expected that under the strict supervision of experienced Editors and with a free exchange of ideas among the Members and identification of each other's mistakes, there would be a drastic improvement in our written English.

After associating myself for almost 7 years and 6 months (or 90 months) with this educational website, I am very sorry to state that my knowledge of English has not improved much. I have learned much less than 90 words ( i.e., one new word per month after joining). My use of prepositions, which has always been my weak area, is still terrible. I haven't learned even one new idiom/proverb. I can't even remember when/whether any Editor/Member has corrected my mistake(s).

In short, my wish of improving my English in association with ISC has not been fulfilled.

What about you? Have you noticed any improvement in your English writing after joining ISC? Please let all of us know the details.

Partha, in my opinion good English is only one element of the good content and only up to that ISC would be concerned. So far this is my understanding.
ISC is an educational content site and expects certain level of quality in the content failing which the content would go in pending category and will require some modifications or corrections by the author before it is resubmitted.
So, basically every member is supposed to improve as far as the style and quality of the content is considered.
If the grammar, syntax, and structure of the content is poor then also the content can be rejected or kept under pending category.
I do not think that ISC will teach us English except pointing out some major mistakes at times. I do not expect more than that in this site or to that matter in any other site in the internet.
I do not think that improving the English language of the members is the objective of ISC. Good English is also a part of the content and only to that extent it would matter for ISC.

Partha, starting a thread with your name and taking your name wherever possible, is, I think, a sign of being egotistic. Why do you want to project yourself so badly?

Partha, just take some time to go through the testimonies of members who have been benefited by the guidance of the so-called illiterate editors (as you presume). You may not. It is your choice, after all.

And Partha, do not, please, let yourself down by taking your name time and again. You might be wise and may not need English lessons. Let others who are less qualified survive.

And to add up, one need to realize his potential and have the interest to improve.

    Partha Sir,
I don't think that you need any improvement in your style of writing- grammatically or otherwise. Your potential is well recognised by most of the members. The way you proceed in your write ups is enough reflecting your commands in English.
Take it granted that there are many more to be learnt from your style of interpretation, selection of words, creation of impacts with your forceful words.
You will remain in the midst of hearts of many readers for your original thinking and this differentiates you from the rest of readers. Go ahead with your own ways to make us impressed.

I wholeheartedly agree with Sheo Shankar Jha and feel that you have already acquired a good skill of writing and having your own style which is of course different for different authors and is actually the individual characteristics by which an author is known in any writer circle.
At the same time what one can improve in ISC is the content. It is the quality of the content and uniqueness of the content that one might learn after contributing for some time.

When I join the India Study Channel, my English was very poor but after some years here, I observe improvement in my English. You can check by visiting my resource my articles that my English is improved at ISC. I also use Grammarly the improvement of my English. Though my English is not very good there is certainly an improvement so far I have noticed.

    1. #770669: Salim Sir, some concrete examples would be more helpful to substantiate your claim.

    2. #770670: Umesh Sir, you have given a very rational response. But, I do know that there are/were at least some Members who expected improvement of English writing skill after joining ISC.

    3. #770679: Hakimuddin Sir, I am glad to know you have clearly and unequivocally admitted that your English has improved after joining ISC.

    4. #770675 and #770678: Jha Sir and Umesh Sir: Both of you have really made me ashamed by your generous comments. Only this much I would say that all said and done, I am more or less aware of my weak areas in English. I can only manage 'kam-chalao'.

#770671: Saji Sir, Namaste. I have gone through your response time and again. Your main issue is using my own name in the heading, isn't it? Sir, earlier also I tried to explain that I like soliloquy. I am deeply impressed by Shakespearean dramas and have been trying to adopt this style (soliloquy) since long. If you check Forum posts which I posted more than six years back, you will find that I used this particular style very often.

So, this is my 'ishtyle', not related to ego or anything else.

Finally, a small request. Please check response #770671. I feel this response is completely irrelevant to the subject raised in the main Forum post. Please consider taking necessary action against this irrelevant response.

[Saving this response of mine elsewhere.]

I always appreciate you, Partha, for your excellent narration skills and language skills. After joining Indiastudychannel I observe some improvement in my writing. Twice or thrice I received some advice from the Editors and also I took some lessons from the writing of senior members like you on this site. Some people never know their potential unless otherwise, somebody points it out. If you feel that you are weak in English, it shows your nature but I feel you are very good at English.
Learning will always happen through communication. Communication is a two-way process. Many times what the teacher thinks may not reach the student. It is a communication gap only. But some people communicate in such a way that one should read between the lines.
Personally, I feel learning is a continuous process and we can learn something or other from every person. So I think definitely we are learning something or other from ISC. If it is not English it may be something other than that.

    Partha Sir,
It would be hard for me to change my impression of you already posted. Take the same in that spirit only. Really eager to know many issues with your lucid explanations.
Umesh Sir, has rightly indicated that contents in write-ups could definitely create lasting effects and in that sense I admire you for your style of expression.

Partha, By going through all the above posts what I understand is that your English is good irrespective of whether you learn something from ISC or not, I think you can't say no to this.

#770691: Dr. Rao Sir, you have also acknowledged the role of ISC in improving your English writing skill. I am also pleasantly surprised that occasionally Editors advised you regarding your writings.

After pondering over this issue for a long time, now I remember that our Managing Editor Madam warned me once or twice about the spacing problem.

Finally, I am overwhelmed by the impression of senior Members about my English knowledge (!), which may not be entirely true. However, their comments encourage me to try to write English in a better way.

Almost all the poems of Nanak ends with 'Nanak! .....' Similarly our friend Partha christened his posting which is nice to noted. This itself depicts the improvement he attained.
