Old newspapers are being sold at a per-unit rate, these days

Many of us will be having the habit of purchasing daily newspapers to know what is happening around us. I used to get daily one English and one Telugu daily newspaper and used to read early in the morning. My wife used to sell all those old papers on a weight basis.

During COVID I stopped purchasing newspapers and online versions only I am seeing. So there is no stock of these old papers in the house. My wife wanted some for her use in maintaining the house. So I went to the shop and asked for a KG of old newspapers. Then the shop owner told me that selling of old newspapers on a weight basis is stopped. Now the transactions are on a per-unit basis only. He charged me four rupees per unit of the newspaper. He told me that is the rate in our city.

I like to know the experiences of other members on this subject.

Which place? For the past many years I am not selling old papers.
It is used for various purposes and also used to support burning of daily wastes too. Before a couple of years I used to give the old newspaper bundles to our society watchman or some NGOs for free.

In our place the newspaper subscription is high, and I consider it as a an essential waste spend.

Of late, the rates of the old newspapers have gone tremendously even to the extent Rs 15 per kg provided the papers are in tact in the sense no portion of it is torn apart apart from its healthy look. Last the rate was hardly Rs 8 per kg. However rates would vary depending upon our cities and locations.
The papers are used in the multiple purposes even in our own household where these are used on the basement of almirahs to protect the dresses and clothes apart from its uses in packing the old books and other miscellaneous usage.

Our person taking old newspapers only for a rate he fixed- he fixed different rates for English papers, Tamil papers and magazines. Now the schools are almost nearing to summer vacation and we have to unload our children's old note books and books. For this hope the paper taking persons fix separate rate for that also.

It seems that there is a demand for old newspaper and though a few years back they were selling for 10 /12 rupees per kg but now it is very common that the vendor is offering 20 rupees per kg for them. In such a situation it is possible that there might be a per piece rate also.
    Knowledge is power.

The practice of selling old newspapers on a weight basis has been prevalent in many parts of India for a long time. However, due to various factors such as the decline in the popularity of newspapers, environmental concerns, and the rise of digital media, the demand for old newspapers has decreased significantly. As a result, many shops and vendors have shifted from selling old newspapers on a weight basis to a per-unit basis.

The price of old newspapers may vary depending on the city, region, and demand. In some places, the price may be higher or lower than the rate mentioned by the shop owner in your case.

Many people still prefer to read physical newspapers as it provides a tangible experience, and they find it more convenient to read than online versions. However, the trend is slowly shifting towards online news sources, which are more accessible and convenient.

In conclusion, the practice of selling old newspapers on a weight basis has become less common, and the transactions are now mostly on a per-unit basis. The price may vary depending on the city, region, and demand.
