Spring festival Vishu an important occasion for happiness

Vishu is a spring festival celebrated in the southern Indian state of Kerala, usually in mid-April. The festival marks the beginning of the new year in the Malayalam calendar and is considered an auspicious occasion by the people of Kerala.

On Vishu, people wake up early in the morning and visit the temple to offer prayers and seek blessings for the new year. A special arrangement of items called "Vishukani" is prepared in advance, consisting of rice, fruits, vegetables, betel leaves, flowers, coins, and a holy book. The arrangement is kept in a decorated room, and people view it as the first thing in the morning, as it is believed to bring prosperity and good luck for the year ahead.

Another important aspect of the Vishu celebration is the giving and receiving of gifts, known as "Vishukkaineetam." People give money or gifts to their family members, friends, and colleagues as a gesture of goodwill and to start the new year on a positive note. Special feasts are also prepared on this occasion, with traditional dishes like "vishu kanji" and "thoran" being served.

Vishu is a joyous and festive occasion for the people of Kerala, marked by rituals, prayers, feasting, and the exchange of gifts.

    Happy Vishu 2023.

Thank you for the information on the festival Vishu. One of my colleagues was from Kerala. He used to celebrate Vishu in a very grand way. He used to call me for dinner on the day of Vishu. They used to make some special and used to offer us a small gift also. Now he retired and went back to his native place in Kerala. Yesterday I talked to him and conveyed my best wishes to him. I wish all the members will have a pleasant and progressive new year ahead.
I convey my best wishes to all the members of ISC on the occasion of Vishu.
