How will non-conducting of Nursing entrance exam in Kerala impact admission, results and career

There is a dilemma and confusion going on in Kerala worrying the prospective students of Nursing in Kerala this year.
Indian Council of Nursing has made it mandatory conducting of Common Entrance tests for B.Sc. Nursing from this academic year. However Kerala government has not yet taken any firm decision or programme to conduct the entrance exam till now. Though a committee was constituted in January itself, to submit a report on conduct of the tests, a final decision is no yet taken.

The Nursing Council has clearly asked the States to complete the Entrance tests by June 15 and to begin classes by August 15,2023 and the whole admission procedure to be completed by September 30.

Though entrance tests were guide lined by Nursing Council since 2021,it was not made mandatory until this year and admissions were made without entrance tests in Kerala.

Now, in a stern information to the State, the Council has warned that not to hold entrance tests for admission disregarding and ignoring the Council directions, may adversely affect the future of students joining the course. It also mentioned the situation may lead to cancellation of registration and denial of job opportunities.

How do you see this situation from the view of students and parents?

Because of the heavy rush of students everywhere competitive entrance exams are kept to select the good candidates out of all those who are appearing for it. So there should be some entrance exam for nursing courses also. Without the entrance exam, the admissions will be based either on the marks of the qualifying examination or other considerations that will change from institution to institution. That might bring some ad hocism in the selection process. To avoid this situation it is always better to have state-wise entrance examinations for every course including nursing.

The non-conducting of Nursing entrance exam in Kerala may impact admission as candidates may be admitted based on alternative criteria. Results may also be impacted as without an entrance exam, it may be difficult to assess the merit of candidates. In terms of career, it may lead to uncertainty and a lack of standardization in the selection process for nursing programs.

Kerala Government should follow the admission norms in such a way that there is no resentment from the sides of students. Under such circumstances, conducting the admission through the entrance examination for Nursing Test could be the only feasible option.
Any delay of the admission committee will further complicate the case.
Month of April is to close soon within a few days and now is to take appropriate steps to finalise the admission procedure through the competitive test so that there is always possibility of fair admissions of the aspirants interested for Nursing Careers.

This act of the Kerala government may make the students, who are interested in joining nursing courses, in their state to lose one year. Otherwise, the State government should talk to the Indian Council of Nursing and convince them to remove the mandatory clause so that the state government can make their own procedure for admitting students to B.Sc, Nursing. If the state government continue its adamant behaviour and ignores the instructions of concerned authorities, the institutions may lose their registration and recognition. Hope the government will not spoil the prospectus of the students who wanted to pursue their education in Nursing.

I do not feel there is a necessity for the entrance examination. It is a B.Sc., (Nursing Course) and the admissions are based on merit. The entrance examinations for each and every course will be a mental tension for the students and extra expenditure to the parents.

Today's newspaper reports say hat the Kerala State Government has issued orders mentioning that this year also the admission process will be as in last year. That is without entrance examination. The report says that the order has not given any reason in this regard. But it also adds that it will be taken up with Nursing Council to avoid entrance examination this year.

We know that many courses have started with the importance of entrance exams. When a state has decided not to conduct an entrance exam, it should be with the state and the council that the issue be resolved than putting the stress on parents or students about the "cancellation of registration and denial of job opportunities" that impacts the future of the children. Let the state decide or put forward its views to the council and solve it then play a Sea-Saw game with the student's life/future.
