A student travelling a long distance to attend school is not advisable

These days selecting the best school for the child is a really big task for the parents. The basic requirement is that the school should be near the residence so that the student will not waste time commuting. This is more important, especially for the students who are studying in metros and cities as the traffic will be very high in these places.

My elder son recently shifted to Bangalore from Hyderabad. The first thing he did was to find out a good school for his daughters. Then he looked for a house near the school. He selected a residence in such a way that the school is just 6 minutes away from the house. But he has to travel almost for an hour to reach the office. But he felt that they should stay near the school only.

I endorsed his decision and appreciated him. We should see that the children will not lose their energy and enthusiasm to learn because of the travel they have to undertake daily to attend school. I think members will be in agreement with this.

The author has raised a very justifiable point that the admission of kids in relation to selection of schools should be such that it is not very far away from their residence. The parents especially the mothers always remain anxious of their well - being of the kids. Their tension would not subside unless they reach their homes safely. In the cities even commuting a distance of 6 Km to 8 Km might take an hour because of heavy traffic on the roads. If the distance is more, time will multiply for coverage of the distance between schools and homes of kids. This is applicable for the schools located in major cities. The mothers remaining at homes would be required to visit schools in case of any abnormal situations since the father of kids are busy people engaged in jobs at a place far from schools. Hence responsibilities would rest with mothers for the well being of the kids. Hence lesser is the distance between the schools and the residence of the kids, parents feel more comfortable.

As a parent, the safety of their kids is their first priority. We as parents want our children to study in the best school and hence are even ready to relocate ourselves so that they get the best. Due to various news and incidents that have occurred, it is very obvious that as a parent, we would like our children to be safe and secure.

When a child's school is nearby, it becomes easy for a parent to monitor them. It is not only about their habits but it includes, their safety, their friends and their time. As mentioned above, Until the child reaches home safely, no parent is free and would check on their child to see that he/she is safe.

If the school is nearby, it helps in knowing that our child doesn't have to travel and face traffic issues. They can easily walk and reach home. It also helps during monsoon season, when there are strikes and it's difficult to get other modes of transport or even when we are unable to reach the school due to any other reason. Children can walk home with their friends or guardians.

As a teacher, I believe that it is not advisable for students to travel a long distance to attend school. There are several reasons why this can have a negative impact on their overall well-being and academic performance.

Firstly, long commutes can be physically exhausting, especially for young children who may not have the stamina to sit in a vehicle for extended periods of time. This can lead to fatigue, which can affect their ability to concentrate and participate in classroom activities.

Secondly, travelling long distances can also be mentally stressful, especially if the student has to wake up early and rush to catch transport. This can cause anxiety and negatively impact their mental health, which can in turn affect their academic performance.

Moreover, long commutes can also reduce the amount of time that students have for extra-curricular activities and socializing with friends, which are important aspects of their overall growth and development. Therefore, I strongly recommend that the organization should consider the well-being of our children when making decisions about school location and transportation.

Ideally, the school should be located within a reasonable distance from the students' homes, and transportation should be provided to ensure their safety and comfort. This will not only improve their academic performance but also promote their overall well-being and development.

It has been told by our elders that they have studied in schools by travelling a quite long distance by walk. Sometimes, they hang their school bags in the going cart on the roads and walk along with them. This was due to non availability of schools in their village or non availability transport etc., But in spite of enhanced transportation also it has been seen that there are students going to schools at a distance by travelling in bus or cycle.
I have seen many children are studying in the Schools of Thiyagaraya Nagar, Chennai by having house in Thiruverkadu nearly at a distance of more than 15 kilometers.
I have seen many students are travelling in town bus to schools from Tenkasi to Ambasamudram even by having good schools at Tenkasi.
Similarly I saw some students going from Idayapatti to Thiruvathavur near Madurai.
This situtation may be due to
    1. The interest of parents selecting the schools by expecting some quality/standard by assuming the local schools are not up to the standard.
    2. No schools are really available in the villages.
This is definitely affect the children to have lack in studies as they could get tired of travelling and this should be definitely seen by government and parents to avoid children to get rid of the 'distance education'.

I quote below a relevant portion from my response to an ISC article.
"Myself, though, was working in public sector organisation and was subject to all-India transfer did not put my son in Kendriya Vidyalaya schools because they were far away from our residence and our working place and timings was not at all suited. So my son studied in State Board schools in two different states and he learned two state languages too. In fact that helped him a lot. I never considered syllabus as the basis but the proximity and convenience to reach the school when needed and for his daily commuting to and from school. Thank God, it really helped when the city in which we were residing was subjected to heavy floods and damages, as he could reach back home safely faster."
I always considered proximity and easy commutation as the first parameter in choosing a school for my son, even from primary class to degree course. Especially in the present days it is only the parents an grandparents who know what tension and stress they have from the time the child starts to school till it reaches back home. I have seen working mothers n workplace growing tense towards afternoon and evening about the safe reach of their children from school. They would be periodically calling or waiting for call from their children to ensure they have reached back safe and on time.

So my personal suggestion is to send children to schools nearby to their residence or at least near to parents' workplace.

Time is a very important entity and we should not waste it. As regards to the children and location of their schools there is no second opinion that it should be near to their residences as far as possible. That gives a lot of convenience and relief to the parents. In these matters parents have to sacrifice their comforts as they might be reaching their workplaces after a good to and fro travelling.
