Local language as the medium of study. Advisable or not?

Generally, many of us prefer to study group subjects in the English Language. The reasons are well known. These days some discussions are going on about introducing the local language as a medium of study for UG and above courses. I understand. In my opinion, this will not be good for the overall development of the student.

A student who studied the course in English medium can go to other countries and continue his education there. English has become a universal Language and many standard books written by well-known authors are available in English languages only. Certain technical and scientific terms should be studied in a common language only. So I think introducing the local language as the medium of study will have a negative impact. Local language can be taught as one of the subjects. That will help the students to understand the local language.

I think others will also agree with this.

Making local language a medium of study is an emerging aspect and the same is followed in almost all schools for many decades. This is necessary to make the student understand the subject well. This does not mean all subjects are to be made in the local language word by word. But the explanations given by the teacher or lecturer should be in the vernacular languages so as to make the student familiar with the subject even after many years in his life. Though we studied Tamil Medium till college Pre University Course, we did not find any difficulty when entering college to grasp the subject in English and even in college our lecturers gave their lectures on the subject with explanations in the local language. Of course, there are difficulties to understand the new words in the subject which were normally not familiar to us then. One day our Law lecturer (We had a lawyer as a guest lecturer) took a class on Mercantile Law. In that a statement told by our lecturers on the exemption to 'pardanish' women. After the class was over, as a student did not understand the meaning of pardanish women, he approached the lecturer and explained to him on the phrase.

So, the medium in local language is not wrong but good to make the learning strong.
