Do you still have any of your school or college books?

As we grow up and likely move to a home in a new place, we would be clearing up, giving away some things to somebody we know who wants them, selling other things, perhaps donating to charitable organizations, etc. One of the things we tend to have stacked up in our cupboards would be our study books from school and college days.

In my home, we gave away some books to the library of a nearby school, a few to our college library, and sold off others along with old newspapers. We did keep a few, such as the well-known Wren and Martin, English literature and poetry books, and Oxford dictionaries. I also kept a couple of projects that I had done, and, out of nostalgia, a book from my craft work as well, as I just did not have the heart to sell them to the kabadi wallah.

What about you? Have you still got any textbooks (not fiction) that were part of a school subject that you had to study? Did you keep any notebooks or even books from your Art or Craft classes? We could even share photos and take a trip down nostalgia...

All my school, junior college and college books were given to my brother who studied the same subjects. Later on, he gave them to some of his friends. Now I don't have any of these books.

But later on during my M-Sc and PhD, I purchased some books which are very useful during my career also. Such books are still with me. I will keep them with me as long as I want them. Once I call it a day and stop professional working, I may give these books to some known people or to some libraries. Some of these books are old versions and they are not available in the market. So I never like to part with them as long as I am doing some professional work.
I have a copy of my thesis of my PhD and copies of Journals in which my research articles were published. I have also copies of theses of students who did their PhD under my guidance. I also have copies of journals in which papers reviewed by me were published.

It is more than fifty years since I completed school education and more than forty five years after I left college. I had been keeping a few texts and my note books for many more years, and all of the winner certificates I got for the various events in school and colleges in a wooden almirah in my native place home. But as time passed and my visits became less frequent, these lay unattended and were fully eaten up by termites. Luckily just a couple of certificates which were in another cupboard could be salvaged.

But thanks to the digital world, I have my second standard Malayalam text book in digital form saved in y mobile. This gives a nostalgic pleasure to m and once in a while I go through it.

But I still have the English Dictionary presented to m by my ninth class English teacher, as I was taking it with me in all my transfer movements and change of residence.

As our paternal uncle was working in same college as Sr. Lecturer, I and my brother used to take books from college library for general ancillary subjects. During my third year degree an auditor was taking classes for the subjects Auditing and Special Accounts as Guest lecturer. He insisted every one to have own book for the subject Auditing. He, though I had my library book for that subject, he asked me to get out of the class room for not possessing own book. During the lunch hour I met my uncle and he gave me Rs. 15/- for the cost of the book to be bought in the evening, I directly went to the staff room and met the auditor assuring him that I would bring the book for the next class by saying sorry. He further told me that, 'Dear brother I asked me to get out of the class room though you are possessing a book but not your own, for this I will give you 15 rupees and with that money you should buy a book'. I told him that I got the money from (my uncle was known to everybody in that college) my uncle, but he refused to get back his money and insisted me to buy a book for me. Further he told me that, ' if you want to give back this money, you can help any student in your life later'. I never forget that guest lecturer and still I am possessing that book as a treasure. As suggested by him, I gave my important books to a poor student later I met in Chennai. He made me to follow following the rules and becoming generous to others.

The reading and learning still on so have interest on other books too in my small library. Every year we try to donate few set of books to the local NGOs / Small schools. It feels good to donate and help the needy students, always.

Although it has been quite some time since I finished school and college, I developed a habit of storing college books, which was encouraged by my father. Some years ago, I gave away some of the books that were treasures for me to my students. However, I still have some books that help me reminisce about my college days.

I still have the Wren and Martin dictionary that was presented to my mother by my uncle during her high school days. I have my class 10 History note, Grammar text of class 9 and Alternative English text of class 10 in addition to my school calendar for class 10. As for my college days, I have almost all the texts and the Record Books which were part of our project work. Referring to them once in a while brings back old memories and so I see to it that they are preserved to the best of my ability.

Though I had a few books of Mathematics and Physics of B.Sc standards lying in the almirahs safely but one thing I noticed one day, the pages are are badly worn out indicating theirs being overaged. Even kabadi wallah refused to take these books because of deteriorating conditions of pages. So these books remain untouched until last year when my friend's grandson finally turned up my residence and noticed such old stocks of books. He asked me to show the books and finally he liked the books because he found that the author has dealt in chapters with a more lucid way especially in chapters of permutations and combinations in Mathematics. Moreover according to him coverage of Magnetism and Electricity in Physics was quite interesting. I thought it would be better to hand over the set of books to that curious reader rather than keeping those old books with me.

I don't have textbooks of my school time except one pertaining to Physics of class 12. Other than that I am having some dictionaries of subjects like Geology, Physics, Geography, Science, Business etc.
Due to everything available online, now I do not refer to them and they are just lying as an old collection.
