What are your views on open book examinations?

Open book examination is a type of examination in which the examinees are allowed to refer to books to answer the questions that are asked in the examinations. In this type of examination, there is no necessity for the student to memorise the subject. But they should understand the subject and refer to the chapters so that they can answer the question by applying the subject.

There are some advantages and disadvantages to this type of examination. Students can answer these examinations with much ease provided they get conversant with the subject and books before attending the examination. But adjusting the time is a tough task as the student may consume a lot of time in searching for the relevant chapter and answering the questions.

I request all other members to come out with their views on this aspect.

The purpose of examination is to make aspirants aware of different inputs prescribed in the course. They should gradually learn the contents enlisted in the books and apart from that they should examine how far the same can be utilised in their practical lives.
The posting created by the author is a kind of new approach and the same has been aired by the academics many a time.
It is correct that we cannot search the relevant information provided in the text - book unless the same has been read multiple times. In other way, the examiners would think at least for a particular question, the examinee has taken efforts to update themselves with the book materials. But such assimilation of text materials would not last forever and with times, the aspirants might not be benefited with such a system.

Traditionally examinations were held to test the memory and grasp of the students in a particular subject. So books or reference materials were not allowed in the examinations.
Now if we allow students to refer to the books then it would be a big shift from the earlier pattern.
It is obvious that if this new pattern is to be adopted then questions should be such that students should not be able to solve them even after referring to the books if they had not studied the subject in good detail.
So making the question paper will be a difficult task for the examiners in this new approach.
In the changing scenario of the educational system in our country, I think we can go ahead with such innovative thinking.

    Knowledge is power.
