How do you understand the word 'Quality:?

We all will be using the word quality many times in our day-to-day affairs. Many times we say the quality of education is to be improved. What quality means. The definition of quality will vary from person to person.

For the money or time or energy I have spent, am I getting back equal benefits? If the answer is Yes, the quality of what we acquired is good. If the answer is no, the quality of what we acquired is not good.

The quality also depends on the likes and dislikes of the individual also. What I feel is a quality product may not be considered a quality product by another person.

I request learned members of ISC to come out with their views in this respect.

Super point raised by the author. The word 'quality' is playing very well in many of us especially since last ten years. If the cost of a product is more from other vendors, the consumers are using the word 'quality' to justify their purchase in that stores.
Vendors also utilizing the word quality to exploit the customers and attract them. According to me nothing is inferior quality except from those who wantonly cheating the consumers.
Recently there are many stores selling vegetables and fruits with the name of Pazhamuthir Solai and is found in almost all residential areas, fully airconditioned and neatly arranged, Their cost is really higher than other vendors and people justify them as ' High Quality' as others are having inferior quality. One day I was planned to buy some vegetables for a function in my house. As required quantity we can buy in such pazhamuthir solai, I preferred to go there in the evening with my wife. Casually I got attracted by a voice of cart vendor selling 'bhindis' on our street selling at 20 rupees per kilo. As the items found good we bought three kilos from them. Evening we went to the stores to buy other vegetables and found the bhindis with same quality at Rs.85 per kilo.
So, according to me the word quality is up to our mind only.

In my observation, "quality" refers to the attributes of any goods or services that do not directly involve monetary or commercial aspects while at the same time, others may also relate this to the satisfaction levels that one feel or experience when using the commodity or the services. A few of the below-mentioned points can well be taken as an instance,

    1. The freshness of vegetables at stalls.
    2. Reliability of using a product multiple times and still giving satisfactory results.
    3. An experience felt while traveling by bus or train or through a hired cab.
    4. Food is being distributed at hotels or restaurants.

Yes, quality is a word which originates from our minds and if we are highly satisfied with some products, events or happenings, we would say that we spent quality times with our clients discussing fruitful ideas. Here there is no parameter to judge the quality except our own assertions. Materials including raw vegetables purchased from the malls might be certified as the quality products from the promoters for which we have to pay premium prices.
At the same time, vegetables from the street vendors cannot be termed as quality products since they don't have their tags of selling quality products from any reputed suppliers.

The book definition of quality is ' Fitness for the purpose '. There will be some implied needs for every product. If these needs are fulfilled we can say the quality is good.

Quality is a relative term. It is generally assessed with reference to a benchmark. Quality is generally monitored during the manufacturing process by testing the produced item either at random or by taking a few samples
from a particular batch. If the items qualify for the parameters of testing then it is said that the product is of quality. The next phase of quality is checked when a consumer uses the product and is fully satisfied by its working. So indirectly he also endorses that it is a quality item.
Generally, quality items are durable also and have a good shelf life or usable life. I remember that earlier we used to get some quality items which were used by us for a very long time. Today the situation has changed and quality items are not like that though they work nicely and give service for some stipulated time. We are entering an era of use and throw in which manufacturers feel to take liberty in making the quality item and even compromise on them.

    Knowledge is power.
