Should parents force their children to take up Science stream in class XI?

After completing class 10, a student has to decide whether to go ahead with Science subjects or Arts. This is a crucial decision and parents also guide the students in this matter. In our country many parents want that their children should become engineers or doctors and under that perception, they force the children to take the Science stream.
What are your views on this? Should the parents force their children to take the Science stream or decide as per the liking and interest of the children? Please share your opinion.

What the author says is nothing uncommon at least in Indian families. The parents don't see any future in other streams other than science.Even the parents were forced to think twice if they opted for other streams. However the situation was different in the British Era when the parents did not take active parts in the selection of streams of their children since they did not know the benefits of selecting science- streams for their children. Here their children had to take their leading roles in the selection of streams. In both the cases where the children did not perform well in the science streams or otherwise, the decision was from the sides of the children. However that was the story of the past but at present the decision for opting for science was sometimes forced by the parents despite the fact that they don't like such a combination of science fruitful to them. The parents realise their mistakes ultimately when they see that their children failed miserably due to the unwanted combination but by the time, they realise their mistakes, it is, too, late for both - children and parents.

It is important to recognize that forcing children to pursue a specific stream, such as Science, and limiting their options to only engineering and medicine careers may not be the best approach. While the Science stream does offer opportunities in fields like engineering and medicine, it is crucial to acknowledge the value and potential of the Arts stream as well. The Arts stream has consistently produced excellent results and has paved the way for successful careers in various fields.
One area where Arts stream students excel is in competitive exams like the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) and State Service Commission exams. These exams require a comprehensive understanding of diverse subjects, including history, geography, political science, economics, and more. Arts stream students often possess strong analytical, communication, and critical thinking skills that prove advantageous in such exams.
Furthermore, the Arts stream offers a wide range of courses beyond just competitive exams. Students in this stream can pursue subjects like literature, philosophy, sociology, psychology, languages, visual arts, performing arts, and more. These courses not only foster creativity and self-expression but also develop important skills such as critical analysis, problem-solving, communication, and empathy.
Moreover, the Arts stream offers career opportunities that are equally rewarding and valuable. Fields such as journalism, writing, advertising, public relations, film-making, graphic design, social work, teaching, and entrepreneurship are open to Arts stream graduates. These professions play a significant role in society, contributing to cultural enrichment, social change, and economic growth.
Encouraging a diverse range of career paths and respecting the individual strengths and interests of students is essential. It is crucial to empower students to choose the stream that aligns with their aptitudes, passions, and aspirations. By promoting a holistic approach to education, we can create a society that values and nurtures talent in both the Science and Arts streams, leading to a well-rounded and prosperous community.

Service to mankind is service to God.

It is obvious in our elders forcing the house children to select the same subject in the xl standard what they have opted in their school time or college time. My paternal uncle who did his basic degree to his Ph. D., in Chemistry asked me to take chemistry in my tenth standard as elective. During 1970's there was a system of selecting one additional subject as elective subject. I was interested to take Algebra and Geometry as elective and was in a dilemma whether to hear uncle's suggestion or my own. At last with the great intervention of my Grand Father I took Algebra and Geometry through his veto power.
So, it is the parents to suggest the subject to their children by keen observation that in which his son or daughter interested.

We discussed almost the same issue in this thread: Aren't we giving too much stress on science education?
    (a) Those who have forgotten Noakhali, how can they protest Sandeshkhali?
    (b) Have no fear of perfection - you'll never reach it. ---------- Salvador Dali

I also feel that this topic is almost similar to what we have discussed in the thread mentioned by Partha Sir.
In my opinion, no parent should force his/ her children to go for any particular stream. The student only has to take the decision. But in early education. many students may not have that much clarity and they may not be knowing the full pros and cons of selecting a particular subject. So always a parents should keep watching his/ her children and see in which stream they are showing interest. Based on that a recommendation can be made. At the same time, we can explain to the child what are the advantages and disadvantages of each subject and how much efforts he/ she has to put in to come out successfully. The parents can also take the help and advise of the teachers of his children to know the talent of the student and ask him about the subjects in which the student is good and can excel.
