AICTE is contemplating to allow qualified persons from industry as technical heads of institutions

So far the position of technical heads in the various institutions in our country were reserved for those qualified persons who had published technical papers in the research journals and given guidance under them to persons doing PhDs.
Now AICTE is considering to allow posting of qualified persons even from the industry in such important positions. It is told that in view of innovations and large number of start ups entering the industry this would be an appropriate step. Now AICTE has put this idea in public domain for opinions and suggestions and after that new rulings would be issued in the matter.

What the author has indicated is an appreciative step taken up by AICTE. It would create a positive impacts on the minds of the personnel working in the industries. There are a lot of experienced people in the different units working as General Managers in the different departments having vast experience of their lines. They might be Mechanical Engineers,Electrical Engineers, Civil Engineers,,Metallurgical Engineers to name a few. Their qualifications coupled with their expertise in their departments make them unique and demanding. Creating opportunities for them in AICTE is an encouraging development especially when they are on the verge of retirements and new opportunities are emerging for them.

For the people who will be selected from the industry by the respective institutions it will not be necessary to have research papers published in a journal or having given guidance to PhD scholars.

Now the government is trying to interconnect both industry and academics. Recently they opened a website for Professors of Practice. Professionals who are retired or working in the industry with some achievements can upload their bio-data on this website and academic institutions that want to use their services can select them and offer them a time-bound work on mutually agreeable conditions. Retired professionals can work without any honorarium if they want. Companies can sponsor them or the University can pay them the salary accepted before appointing them. No qualification is required but noteworthy achievements should be there to the credit of the candidate.
Already many private engineering colleges are appointing retired persons from industry to teach in their colleges. Thus a lot of interaction is going on. Hope this step of appointing an industry person as head of the institution may further enhance the interaction further, I hope.

For the development of skills by the students especially in the technical field the faculty should have more practical knowledge and hands-on experience. If necessary they should be able to perform the act by themselves and show it to the students. For that, there is no necessity of guiding PhD students or publishing papers. So I feel the step taken by the government is a positive step only.
