Is it morally right for school or college teachers to take personal coaching?

It is widely seen in society that teachers/professors take private coaching or tuitions to earn some extra income apart from the salary they get for the teaching jobs.

Our parents proudly say that in their generation teachers were so good that they never felt the need for any tuition or private coaching. Those days school teachers and college professors were more interested in imparting knowledge. But, nowadays teachers and professors are more interested in extra money. In some cases, it happens that teachers do not complete the syllabus in school in time, so students and parents feel the need and urgency to join their private tuition /coaching.

Is this system morally correct? Is it not shameful for teachers to make a business out of education with such tricks? I feel it is not at all ethical. What is your opinion about such teachers?

What the author has indicated in her posting is relay a thought provoking question. The teachers/ professors while in their service cannot take up the assignments of teachings in the form of private tuitions. They are supposed to promote education among the students for their benefits and for that they should not involve themselves for earning part time money through the private tuitions.
However the employers ignore this fact and even if they take some actions for the errands, situations could be tensed since not not a few are involved in such a rackets but the size of such errands are large enough to be punished and any such actions could lead to backfires within the teaching system. The teacher community should themselves be sensitive to this aspect and should take lessons from the teachers of the past following the health system of teachings.

Who is thinking about ethics these days? Doctors who are working as Professors and doctors in government universities and hospitals are having private practices and earn lakhs of rupees and no tax is being paid on this income by many doctors. When there is no mistake there, why we should think of tuition by government teachers?

I agree with the author that doing private practice or taking tuition is not ethical. If a government teacher concentrates on teaching in the schools some unemployed youth can try and help the students in having a better education. That will fetch them some income.

An MLA who is getting a huge amount as salary and perks is not satisfied with that income and tries to make some additional money unethically. Wherever we see these days we will find such unethical practices only.

There was a time when teachers did not take up tuitions due to mainly ethical reasons and also due to the trend at that time. If a student went to their houses and sought some help they helped without taking any money.
This changed drastically because of commercialization in every field and education was no exception.
Teachers doing private coaching and tuitions became the norm and today it is a quite normal thing.
In our country doctors in Govt jobs are paid a non practicing allowance (NPA) every month hoping that they would not do private practice. Something of that nature is not applicable for the teachers.
Anyway coaching/tuition by teachers today is accepted in the society and actually there is a big rush of parents for good teachers.

    Knowledge is power.

In some sense, yes it is not ethically right. But if a teacher teaches in the right way, dedicatedly and without bunking the time duration assigned. Then I think there are no such things that affect ethics. If a teacher intentionally to do coaching not appropriately teach, or encourage students to tuition, it is not just ethically wrong but also lawfully. In today's context, almost all teachers practice this to earn spare income and most of them deliberately deteriorate the classes in the school.

Not only the teachers are defaulters in violating the discipline, the same can be seen in most of the professions. Take the case of the reputed surgeons and specialists getting lacks of monthly payments from the medical colleges but there is no end to their greediness wishing more and more always. Practically, they are good talkers providing you tips how valuable is moral ethics in our day today life but such preaching is meaningless when they are themselves not following ethical values.
There is a gross discipline every where. While working in the steel plant, I have seen the head of department of major shops highlighting the importance of discipline in our working culture but usually some heads of the different departments used to turn up the plant at around 12.30 pm in lieu of 8 am sharp being the usual time of reporting.

If the same teacher does not(and I feel most teachers will not) deliberately discriminate against the non-coaching students in the class, then teachers can take up personal coaching. The teacher should not use any kind of persuasion techniques to wean more students towards personal coaching.

As a teacher takes classes on a medium standard and level applicable to all students, there may be some students (parents) aiming higher level and there may be some having lower comprehension levels. Both these may need more focused and specialized attention. Personal coaching by the same teacher or a similar teacher dealing with the same syllabus will be able to help those students.

So I support personal coaching by teachers with the condition that they should not discriminate against the students in the class, and should not use any promotional tactics to attract more students for personal coaching.

There is nothing wrong with this practice. However, the institutions, as per their rules and regulations may allow and may not allow such practices. If the students are not performing the blame naturally goes to the teachers and few of the above submissions seem to have centered on this, which cannot be true all the time. The teachers have responsibilities, but equal responsibilities are also with the students and their parents. Due to the increasing cost of living housewives also do outside jobs resulting in negligence in parenting and due to this the tuition and the coaching centers are in huge demand.

Now our current society cannot live without this.

"No teacher shall engage himself or herself in private tuitions or private teaching activity". This is under section 28, Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTE) 2009.Almost all schools in India, other than minority institution are brought under the ambit of RTE and hence this rule is applicable to all Govt, aided and private schools. Supreme Court judgement also ratified the Constitutional validity of the RTE act. Hence there is no question of moral or immoral in it. It is illegal.

The Govt school teachers are paid well and are getting additional benefits also(fringe benefits), while, private school teachers are not happy with this rule.

But, I think, teaching by teachers at Home is not illegal. It is to be debated.
