Online courses for upgrading the vocational skills are advisable?

After a sudden rise in online education in the Covid era, there are many courses available online for upgrading your vocational skills. Are these courses worth it, for adding value to your resume? Do the certifications received in these courses have any weightage from the employment perspective?

In your view which is a better option, an online course or a course attended at an offline institute?

Skill development courses are available online as well as offline also. But which is better is the question raised here? That depends on the skill you want to learn. For example, carpentry is a skill course. Learning it offline will not be of much help to the person. Here practical skill is more important. So a person who works by hand using the tools required can only get the skill. But there are some other skills like communication skills or singing skills etc. Here you can develop the skills by sitting in the house and learning from an experienced person online. So saying online is the best or offline is the best may not be correct. The individual has to decide based on the vocational skill he/ she wanted to develop and then select either offline or online.
These days there are many opportunities for the individual who wants to learn more and more. Technology is bringing everything to our doorsteps. How we utilise the same is our wisdom.

If the skill has more to be developed by hands on the job, then offline study is better and purposeful. But some skills need more theoretical side and they can be studied and developed by online study.
But skills, whatever way they are learned, have to be practiced to have the right experience and expertise.

Some of the skills where practical training is necessary are to be learned in offline mode only. There are some skills where a part is in theory and the remaining is in practice. In such cases, one can join the online course followed by a short practical experience in the nearby facility affiliated with that online education agency. For many trade courses, it will not be possible to learn online and the best thing would be to join an offline institute for acquiring learning in that field.

The skills can be achieved through the both the modes - online and offline but most of the daily activities relating home repairs such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical repairs are done by the technician with a great precision based upon their expertise. In the initial stage, to take advantage of the experienced people can make their jobs easy and comfortable with the familiarities of different techniques and later the learners can add their expertise to expedite the working process.
Even online jobs cannot be done perfectly without the guidance of a competent professional. This is true for the initial stage but later the learner would know other techniques to ease his job process.

When we do not have the options, we tend to opt for anything which is easily available to us. During Covid times the movements were restricted and mass had few options therefore there was a surge in demand for online courses. Even the stock value of those was at an all-time high. Usually, the applicants intend to fill the gaps through these online courses by adding to their skills and at the same time adding more value to their resumes hoping to get a good incremental job with a good chance of promotion in the future.

Now the thing is whether the online courses have any weightage in terms of the expectancies. There are fewer chances for this. Please be noted that options are limited and herein one will have to compete with the others who have completed the regular courses in the respective areas. And while shortlisting the applicants, the resume carrying the regular courses has far more weightage than someone who has got the degrees and certifications through online courses. There are reasons why someone who is enrolled in regular courses will have more dedicated resources to work with while on the other side, this is never possible.

Online process would make the learners familiar with the different techniques related to a particular job. Though offline courses are also available for BBA, Diploma in Artificial Intelligence, Diploma in IT but the online mode would be economical in terms of cost apart from management of time. This could be suited to those persons who are the regular working persons but are interested to take some training in some vocational courses in their free time.
Such types of courses are not available for all vocational courses such as plumbing, electricians, carpentry etc but online courses especially the management and computer courses are attractive enough for their gainful employments.

I want to add that there are some online courses which are skill oriented and have a value in the industry. In such cases a person can have advantage in getting a job easily in private sector.
There has been a paradigm shift in the job market and proficiency of a person is taking precedence over his academic certificates. It makes sense to acquire certain short term skill oriented courses and then hunt for a related job. Some basic courses are even available free in the web and that is another opportunity for the knowledge seekers.

Members have contributed valuable points to this discussion. I have gone through some reputed sites which are offering basic courses in many areas for those who want to learn in that specific stream. People are taking advantage of these free courses offered by the reputed online entities and I observed that there are some courses which are very beneficial for starting learning in that field.
Some of these courses are - Basic Marketing Skills, Fundamentals of Customer Relations, Online Business Opportunities, Basics of Good Coding Practices, Digital Marketing, Web Designing, etc.

The surge in online courses for vocational skills offers pros like flexibility and affordability, but requires self-discipline. Offline institutes provide structured learning and networking opportunities, but demand fixed schedules and higher costs. To decide, consider course quality, career goals, and learning style. Both options can add value to your resume, depending on industry recognition and your commitment to skill enhancement.
