Merit should be rewarded in educational institutes

These days we are saying many types of reservations for admissions to colleges and schools. These reservations are introduced in our constitution for a particular time period. But it is getting extended from time to time. We have no choice and we have to respect the rules of the land. Again the same reservations candidates are getting stipends also as they may not be able to complete their studies without proper support. All these candidates are getting free uniforms, free books, free lunch and in addition to that they are being given some pocket money also. This is also acceptable as they are financially poor.

But there are some people who are financially poor but they are meritorious. Such candidates should also be considered for some special assistance. I know many people who are not from reserved categories and not able to continue their studies due to financial problems. At least government should consider some special scholarships for such students. What are the views of other members on this subject?

I am worried that merit and excellence are deliberately discouraged for some reasons not comprehensible to me.

First they stopped specifying ranks in most board exams. Then they prohibited exhibiting photos of toppers in their school. Now they are trying to introduce open-text exams.
Unless merit and competition are encouraged, quality will suffer.

All were supporting privatization citing reasons for inefficiency in the public sector because there is no reward for excellence nor punishment for lack of performance. There was no competition.

But when it comes to the education field, the political parties and governments headed by them want to bring mediocrity. It is interesting to see that the same political leaders send their children abroad for higher education as they think the standard here is not good.
While sufficient support may be given to the underprivileged and vulnerable, at the qualifying level, there should not be any disparity and only merit should be encouraged. India suffered a brain drain due to this wrong policy of compromising merit and even discouraging hard work and merit. That is why we can see a pitiable situation of Indians holding patents in many areas, working for the US and other countries. It is high time for a rethink and putting things on the proper rails.

Instead of extending more support to the merit, India is trying to discourage them and that is why we see many of our intellectuals heading various top foreign organisations and also working in other countries in top positions. Any country should utilise the wisdom that is available in the country for the development of the country. But unfortunately, we are not seeing any actions from the government and the brain drain will continue as long as this point is not taken care of.

The points enlisted by the author are really worth and these points must be supported by the tye distinguished institutions. The talented ones are the real gems providing the entire world of new concepts in the areas of medicine, science, literature, technology etc due to their creative thoughts. They are respected because of their excellent creatives and many youngsters try to follow their footsteps.
What is new in it doing studies in the same fashion as others are doing? But the career - path of the talented youths can be changed with the injection of motivation, creating a new way of their thinking modes. Hence such educational institutions deserve rewards for their efforts to change the personalities of students from the ordinary ones to remarkable ones.

If merit of a student is not given cognisance then it would make him discouraged and he will try to find other ways for making a career in his life and might leave the country for greener pastures. It had happened in the past and is also happening today. This is high time that all sorts of other admissions including management quota are to be stopped and only merit should be taken in consideration.
If reservation is to be given then it should be only for the poor and downtrodden irrespective of his cast and creed.

    Knowledge is power.
