I am not able to understand parents' mindset regarding medium of instruction

In Andhra Pradesh, most of the Government Telugu medium schools are slowly getting converted into Government English medium schools. Here, I am seeing parents slowly moving their children from private English medium schools to Government English medium schools. We are seeing some "no seats available" boards in some of the Government English medium schools.

In Odisha, we can see both private and Government Odia medium schools. But most of the parents join their children in private Odia medium schools and they don't show interest in joining their wards in Government Odia medium schools.

In one state, parents are moving towards the Government English medium schools and in the other state, parents are moving towards the private Odia medium schools.

I am not able to understand the parents' mindset if I compare both the scenarios.

I think the parents in AP are having more interest in Engish medium. They want their children to study in English Medium and go abroad and settle there and earn a good amount of money. They feel the chances for their kids may come down if their children study in Telugu medium. Probably, they have very high aspirations and they have more liking towards English. I have also observed the same trend mentioned by the author in AP. Mummy and daddy culture is more in AP than AMMA ( Mother in Telugu) and NANNA ( Father in Telugu) culture,
Probably Odisha people have more orientation towards their mother language. Probably they don't want their children to strain more to learn English and they don't want their children to forget their mother tongue. There is an entire difference in the minds of the people of both states. Anyhow, my personal opinion is the choice should be given to the student regarding the medium of instruction at the same time children in primary and secondary school should study in their mother tongue only and afterwards only they should be allowed to choose their preference.

    Rao sir,
My intention here is, how parents of AP are joining their children in Government English medium schools? Are they losing confidence in private English medium schools?

I have observed this trend in my relatives' circle in AP.

As discussed by the author, two different trends in AP and Orissa are being observed. It might be due to their mindsets of the parents. The parents of AP are more inclined towards English than those of living in Orissa. In terms of budget, they are cautious enough at the same time in respect of their budgets and as such they prefer to Government managed schools to privately managed ones to learn English. In terms of their perceptions, they are sharp minded people having clear strategies to move forward.
They remain more interested to see their wards should shine well academically and if possible they should get assignments in overseas. Hence we must say that the people of AP work sincerely towards their goals and luckily they achieve the same.

Most of the parents prefer to admit there children in English medium schools. That is very common in our counyry. The next preference is the faculty that is the quality of the teachers. If the parents find from some reliable source that the quality of teachers in government English medium schools is better than the private English medium schools then they might shift their children from private to Govt. That could be one reason why such things are happening in AP.
In Odisha the only consideration might be the school fee and depending on that parents might be taking a dicision.

The thread says: "In one state, parents are moving towards the Government English medium schools, and in the other state, parents are moving towards the private Odia medium schools."
I am not clear as to what core point the author wants to explain or find the answer to.

Here there are two situations or contexts
    1. In AP parents are "moving their children from private English medium schools to Government English medium schools. "- i.e. they change schools from private to Govt. Medium is the same.

Hence what I understand is (a) standards of quality and facilities are now better than or equal to that of private schools. So with the same standard and quality govt schools are more affordable and so parents are moving their children to govt. schools.

    2. " parents join their children in private Odia medium schools and they don't show interest in joining their wards in Government Odia medium schools."
Here also the medium is the same. It seems private schools have better standards of teaching and better facilities than govt schools. Also, the parents may be able to afford the fees in private schools. So they are moving children from govt schools to private schools.

There is a general trend in most regions to send their children to English medium schools because now people are more aware of opportunities available in the wide world and every parent wants their children to get the best education and more opportunities to learn and earn which English helps more. In many states now even the ordinary English medium schools are also overlooked and parents put their children in 'International Schools'.

If the government schools have good facilities and keep good standards, and if the students have enough opportunities for higher studies and jobs in the same state, then parents will not hesitate to put their children in local language medium, govt schools.

    Venky sir,
The core point here is, in one state for the same medium (English), parents are approaching government schools and in another state for the same medium (Odia), parents are approaching private schools.

In general, parents in India have immense faith in private schools irrespective of the medium. How come the trend is changing in AP? Is it better to introduce English medium in all the government schools across India so that parents will approach government schools?

As far as I understand, one of the aims of good government is to impart education to people at the lowest case or better, completely free, and the way the author has describes the scenario of Andhra Pradesh, this shift of people from private schools to government schools seems positive and praiseworthy, I don't find any problem with that, because, in most part of the country, the situation is similar to Odisha. It is not better if the whole of India could have a situation like Andhra Pradesh. I don't know how much better the education situation is in these government schools but if it is good, I only see it as a positive change. Personally, I feel whole education should be free, but seeing the huge population and fewer resources for them in India it is not yet possible, but it is one of the goals to achieve.

But during this process, we may lose our primary education in our mother tongue if all the government schools are converted into English medium schools.

Many responses have poured in and I know this might be a late observation but I don't think parents in Odisha are preferring private Oriya medium schools. I request the author to kindly provide the source of this information.

As per reports, they are rushing to private schools where the medium of instruction is English and it is the quality of education and the dedication of teachers that are becoming the important deciding factors.

    Saji sir,
The meaning here is whoever are interested in Odia medium, they are sending their wards to private Odia medium schools and not to the government Odia medium schools. That does not mean that all the parents in Odisha are rushing towards the private Odia medium schools.

Bhuvan, I got the crux of your thread but what I said is that as per reports parents in Odisha are preferring private English medium schools and not Oriya medium schools as you suggested. Hence the query.

As far as AP is concerned, I think the initiative by the governments to revamp the government schools and their efforts to ensure quality education for free or fro a nominal fees has started bringing in positive results.

    Saji sir,
As in India, Odisha parents also give preference to private English medium schools only. But whoever are interested in Odia medium, they are sending their children to private Odia medium schools even though Odia medium is available in government schools. But in AP, parents are sending their children to government English medium schools even though English medium is available in private schools.

  • #773831
Many of my known friends and relatives in Andhra Pradesh stopped sending their children to government schools and admitted to them private English medium schools. The observation made by the author is different from my observation.
As mentioned by the author members the quality of education is more important. So people will get a feeling after reading this thread that AP government schools are improving their standards. But is it a fact? There will be differences of opinion. It is good if really the government's schools are making good efforts to improve their standards.

    Rao sir,
The situation you have mentioned was there until government schools were having Telugu medium. But now the trend is changing slowly. Even affordable parents are moving their children to government schools in our region. Can we imagine "no seats available" board in state run government schools?

If that is the case, it is welcome. Many of my relatives in AP are teachers in government schools in North Andhra districts. Recently. I am not in touch with them. I may have to contact them once so that the situation in those districts will also be known.

The parents and government might have thought that finally, a student must pursue his/her higher education in English medium, then why should not they introduce it to a student from the very beginning? So that they grasp it easily while doing higher studies.Moving toward government English medium schools in Andra Pradesh as the parents may an intention to teach them in an English medium school which make easily accessible to them by the government without any education expenditure. On the other hand, in Odisha parents may have a perception as they would be inclined to their language. And opted for private Odia medium schools to get quality education because peoples believe that government schools are not good as private medium schools.
