    Two degree simultaneously

    Sir/ Madam,
UGC in April 2022 issued a guideline that one can pursue two degrees simultaneously, but there is a condition that "No retrospective benefits can be taken by those who have already DONE two courses before publication of this guideline." But my situation is I started two courses in 2021(before UGc guideline in April 2022), both my courses in distance mode and I completed two degrees in 2023( after UGC guideline). I was planning to drop one course but as I saw UGc allowing two degree I hence continued and completed both. Now my question is will both my course be valid though I took admission before April 2022 but completed after that cut off year? If it becomes invalid then will both my degree be cancelled? Will legal action be taken against me? If i get job with these degrees will that be terminated?

The guidelines issued by UGC are very clear and stipulate that for the courses which were completed before the issue of these guidelines, these rules will not be applicable. As I understand, in your case you have completed the degrees only after the date of new guidelines issued and your degrees should be valid under these circumstances.

UGC has liberalised the issue of dual degree and it is mentioned that - 'students can pursue two full-time academic programmes in the same time frame given that class timing for both programmes do not clash with each other.'

As per the new guidelines given by the university grants commission both the degrees will be valid only. Even though you started the degree before the decision you completed the course only after the issue of notification only. So I am of the opinion that there will be no issue.
I don't think any legal action may be initiated against you. Worst comes to worst, one of the two degrees will be cancelled. You can go ahead by applying for higher studies or for searching a job.

This reminds me about my cousin. My cousin Ravindran was interested to take Physics as Major in his Graduation but he got only Chemistry as Major and Physics as ancillary. My paternal uncle was working in our college as Chemistry lecturer. My cousin approached for his help in changing to the Physics major. My uncle tried but he could not. Finally on my uncle's suggestion he continued his graduation in Chemistry Major and at his third year completion he got special permission from University through my uncle and he did additional graduation with Major Physics to quench his thirst.

I think in no case, you will be penalised for acquiring two degrees simultaneously. Prior to promulgation of this rule, you were not aware of your fate and you followed the guidelines prevalent in that time which did not stop you from pursuing two degrees simultaneously.
From your side, there is no violation of discipline in respect of continuation of your studies.
The university is very much aware of the complications which might arise from introducing the new circular. It is not only you who is affected alone but there will be cases of thousands of students. Hence be relaxed nothing adverse effects will be noticed due to promulgation of new rule.
