Achieving admission in a medical college
Sunil was a good student and always concentrated on his studies and that was the reason that he got good marks in his class 10 exam. The year was 1968 and Sunil passed his class 10 from UP Board of Education. He obtained good marks in Mathematics and Science and his parents told him to take Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics combination in class 11. Accordingly, Sunil took admission to class 11 and started his studies. This story pertains to 55 years back and at that time there was not much awareness for career-making in either the parents or the students. It was only when the student reached the class 12 level that they started to think about applying to Engineering or Medical entrance examination which were the top choices then. Sunil was also not much aware of what he would be doing after completing class 12. Anyway, an easy option of joining the UG course was always there. Sunil was a serious student and always engaged in his studies and was sincere and attentive in the classroom. He Got good marks in class 11 and was admitted in class 12.
One day, one of their relatives Major Sohan Singh who was on annual leave visited them and he was talking to Sunil's parents and asking them what was the plan for Sunil after doing class 12. Sunil's parents were not able to give any concrete answer because they did not know what he would be doing. Major Sohan Singh called Sunil and just asked what was on his mind for his future career. Sunil was also not very clear about that and simply answered that he would be doing the UG course after completing class 12. Sohan Singh was not surprised because at that time that was the usual thing that most of the students answered. Major was an experienced person and he started to ask Sunil whether he wanted to be an engineer or teacher and so on. Sunil answered 'not sure' to all the options that the Major was suggesting to him. Then Major mentioned some other options and when he asked whether Sunil wanted to become a doctor, suddenly Sunil's eyes brightened and he gave an affirmative nod. Sunil's parents were surprised to see it as they never knew that their son was aspiring to become a doctor.
Sunil was always fascinated with the job of a doctor and used to see them with respect and awe. Somewhere deep in his heart he probably wanted to become a doctor. Major Sohan Singh inquired about his subjects and when he was told that the combination was Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, he pointed out that biology was required as a subject in higher secondary if the student wanted to appear in the medical entrance test.
Major Sohan Singh told them that if the boy was interested in the medical line then after passing his class 12 he can again give the class 12 examination by choosing biology as a subject and during one year he will have to study only biology and pass the exam and then he would be eligible for appearing in the medical entrance test.
That was a piece of new information for the parents and Sunil made up his mind to follow that route after passing class 12. He did not join a UG course and stayed in the same school to attend the biology class and appeared in the exam in that single subject and passed it with a good percentage. That made him eligible to appear in the medical entrance test (in the state of UP it was known as PMT at that time). As usual, he worked hard and qualified in the medical entrance test also and joined the MBBS course at a medical college in UP. Sunil was happy and satisfied pursuing a medical career.
