Did you have any scary or funny moments in a campus lab or studio?

We once had a discussion on science practicals in labs in school/college. Today there are very sophisticated labs not just for science, but also mathematics, IT, engineering, architecture, etc. Despite all safety and security measures in place with teachers, as well as lab attendants supervising, we may hear of an unfortunate mishap. On the other hand, something funny may happen, such as instead of the result that one expected in, say, an experiment with magnets, a hilarious episode will have the entire class in splits!

Have you personally experienced, or heard of, some unique or funny, or frightening things happening in any type of lab? It could even be the computer lab or the fashion design lab/studio.

That's a really great topic to discuss for people like me. Let me go back to my school days.

The Xth Board result was declared. By the grace of Almighty God and due to continuous and unending efforts by my parents and teachers, I cleared it with loads of marks (which I had never even dreamt). Thereafter, I took admission in the same old school; of course, in the Science stream.

We (my friends and myself) started thinking ourselves some hero or some superhuman by virtue of our marks in Xth Board. In addition, we started thinking our old school our personal property. Many of us were fascinated by the Chemistry lab of the school and carried out many mischiefs in that lab.

During those days, I started reading the famous Byomkesh Bakshi detective stories and novels. In one such story, I read about 'vanishing ink' (disappearing ink). Its potential attracted me immensely. My interest grew manifold when I came to know from one of my cousins who was studying M.Sc. (Chemistry) at that time, that it would be very easy to make vanishing ink in school-level Chemistry lab.

I immediately informed my closest friend Susmit about this vanishing ink and he immediately became a willing partner. Then, in a Chemistry practical class, during the absence of our Chemistry teacher Ajay-babu, and with kind guidance of Sanatan-da (Chemistry lab-attendant), Susmit and I made a very good amount of vanishing ink using vinegar, thymolphthalein and NaOH solution. I still vividly remember that the vanishing ink was deep blue in colour.

But then the problem started. When Susmit and I were loudly congratulating each other after the success of our personal experiment, another friend of ours, Sushanta, strongly objected to our shouting. Susmit and I became very angry and put the entire vanishing ink kept in a medium-sized beaker on the white shirt of Sushanta. The white school-uniform of Sushanta became deep blue.

Sushanta violently attacked both of us. Susmit and I started defending. Hearing the commotion, both Ajay-babu and Sanatan-da returned. They quickly understood what had happened. They told Sushanta that his shirt will again be white very soon. But, at the same time, they asked Susmit and me to meet Ajay-babu with our guardians the next day.

What my father did (as also Susmit's father) after hearing our activities in the Chem lab, should be kept secret from the great members of ISC.

[P.S.: Anyone who wants to play mischief with vanishing ink, may contact Partha K. for guidance. Excellent result guaranteed.]

In the year 1965, when I was in my high school, I had biology as one of the subjects and one day we were given practical lecture in the biology lab where some dead frogs were made available to us and the teacher told us that on that day some practical learning will be there.
The frog was pinned to a board with its stomach upside and the teacher showed us as how to dissect it and view the inside parts and distinguish them from each other. It was an interesting lesson and after completing it we were asked to practice on the dead frogs.
One of the students was hesitating much and as soon as he put the knife on the stomach of the frog then before he could cut it he started crying loudly. We all were alerted and called the teacher. The teacher consoled the student and told him there was nothing to afraid and once again showed him how to do it.
But that student was not prepared to do that and started crying as soon as he attempted it few times.
We all had sympathy with the emotions of the classmate. May be he had too much concern for animals. May be his family was a strong animal lover.
Even later he could not do it. The effect of that incident is still in my memory.

    Knowledge is power.

In respect of response of Umesh Sir(#774087), I recall the case of a vegetarian Marwari girl. On the first day in front of dissection tray, she vomited and almost fainted seeing the senseless toad (frog). She started crying expressing her inability to dissect the toad.
Although we were laughing and ridiculing her, later we understood that it was a very serious cultural issue for her. She got her VIth subject (Biology) changed to avoid dissection of live toad/cockroach.

During our studies, up to X class, there were no lab experiments. Once in a while our science teachers used to bring some glassware and equipment and show us in the classroom only. But from XI class onwards we used to have practicals in both Physics and chemistry subjects. I used to find chemistry labs very interesting. We used to enjoy developing different colours by adding different indicator drops to water at different pH values.
One day our chemistry teacher showed us Sodium metal. All our classmates have seen the same for the first time. It was kept in a liquid in a bottle. One of my classmates took a small piece of sodium metal and put it on a piece of paper and kept the same in his pant pocket and left the lab. By the time e reached the main gate of the college, he started feeling a burning sensation near his pant pocket and immediately he took out the packet which already caught fire. The student was not aware that sodium will catch fire if stored in the air and always this metal will be stored in Kerosene only.

In our school a teacher named K. S. Raman, in charge of Biology subject was very lean. In his laboratory attached room there was a full size Human skeleton kept. Students jovially gone to that room after lunch hour and told 'Good after noon sir' to the skeleton. Raman sir, with smile shouted at them to go out of the room.
