    Make contextual learning compulsory

Should an engineering college student be exposed to something that happens around him or her? Should a Physics under-graduate go around to the nearest farm and learn about organic farming?

The answers to both these questions is in the affirmative. There should be compulsory contextual learning and this can through a 45 days internship during one of the summer holidays at the end of the first or second year, or third year in the case of the engineering graduate. For example, an engineer may go on to have his own start-up at some stage of his career, and the NGOs might be useful business partners in his endeavor. In some States, there are hundreds of self-help groups engaged in highly productive activities and a collaboration with such groups can be a platform for good exports as well.

We need drastic action in this regard and the educationists of all States need to sit together and evolve some basic rules in this regard.

Contextual learning is very important. Just reading books and hearing the lectures may not be sufficient. A student should be able to connect what he is learning with his own experiences.
An engineering graduate may see a photo of a turning machine and he may read about turning. But unless otherwise, he sees a turning machine and understands the equipment and uses it, the very purpose of the study will not be fulfilled. The internship is a step forward towards such a system only I think.
A student of BITs, Dubai, in his 2nd year of B Tech, was asked to complete an internship in a related industry during vacation. Such initiatives will improve the knowledge of the student and also he will get exposed to the actual scenario that is prevailing around him.

I think contextual learning is part of almost all professional courses. Contextual learning is, in a way, the amalgamation of content and context. It is a theory that is based on the principle that a student would be able to understand a content better when he places or is guided to place what he reads to a real life context. We do have internships, practical classes, project works etc that are contextual learning and they, being part of a course, are compulsory. Contextual learning will surely help a student to comprehend what he studies because he would be experiencing what he has read and so will be able to connect more accurately and this will in turn help him to approach the subjects in a practical way. Though we have conventional methods for contextual learning, I think teachers and students can explore other possibilities so as to give the process a wider meaning and perspective.

Contextual learning is the process of reconnecting with the books with which we have already gone through in our learning process. While practicing a project, we need to recall up all the relevant contents based upon certain theories. This could be meaningful for the professionals if he could apply all such concepts in their real situation.,
To understand the importance of contextual learning, teachers can help us to learn the things better or even they will tell us other means to strengthen our concepts.

Practical exposure is very essential in proper learning of a subject and any effort in the shape of a project or internship or association with an NGO or working as a start-up is welcome.
Many institutions are now molding their courses to accommodate external pieces of training and necessary exposure to the students but more efforts are required in this direction.

    Knowledge is power.
