Group discussions should be a part of examinations in higher studies

After course completion, the knowledge obtained by a student will be tested by the academic institutions to decide whether the candidate can be awarded the degree or not.

This testing will be mainly by writing examinations up to the high school level. Question papers will be given to the students and the answers written by them will be evaluated. From the 11th class onwards there will be practical examinations also. In post-graduation and higher courses in addition to the above two, viva voce examination will also be conducted by the examiners.

To develop communication skills and presentation skills, I feel instead of viva voce, Group discussions can be organised and the examiners can observe the students during the discussions and even they can ask questions to individuals. This will be helpful to the students in faring well in job interviews. I hope all the other members will be in agreement with me in this aspect.

A good suggestion by the author. In an interview the individual knowledge and mannerism is judged by the examiner but in a group discussion many dimensions of the personality of a person are revealed as well as his knowledge, communication skills, and ability to convince others is also made out by the observers.
So conducting a group discussion for that purpose is a good idea but at the same time I feel that individual interview will also be required for final assessment.

    Knowledge is power.

Project work is the perfect solution to the question raised by the author. Project work involves finding a solution to a problem using knowledge gained in all the subjects or the majority of the subjects. After the completion of the project work, each group is assigned the task of explaining their project to the rest of the class. The teachers will also be present and from time to time ask leading questions. The students develop problem-solving capabilities as well as communication skills. This is a practice in technical institutes.

There is no departure from the author's review in this contest. In order to carry out any academic assignment, the candidate must have a thorough knowledge of the project. In that sense, lessons learnt in the school stage cannot be ignored since that is the foundation stage and without the full concept of the same, the candidate will remain in the state of ambiguity. Hence I am of the view that the points enlisted by the author is highly justified to assess the full potential of the aspirant. Evaluation of knowledge up to the higher secondary stage should not be ignored while the candidate is to take up his graduation course.
Group discussion is a part of real assessment of total personality of the candidate including the test of his behaviour pattern and other positive attributes such as patience, style of representation, communication skills etc and hence inclusion of the same would prove to be litmus test for his assessment of full potential.

I feel there is a difference between a Project presentation and a Group discussion. In the project presentation, the candidate will explain his work and answer the queries raised by others. But in Group discussions, the candidate has to take his own initiative and participate in the discussion. Anyhow project presentations also will expose the candidate to a group.

The mentality of students is different if any term is used for examination. The group discussion is really a good in student life as it removes the shyness, increases the explanation power, increases willingness to express etc.,
In our college during 1977 itself, our HOD Prof. C. S. Krishna casually introduced this group discussion system. He used to ask one question to student. When that student answered, he asked another student whether the first student told was correct and if wrong what might be the reply. In this method he encouraged students to note the question from him and answer of the student.
