For how many hours a student should study every day?

This question came for discussion among us in our house. How many hours of study on average are required for a student? I think many other houses also such point may come for discussion.

As a matter of fact, we can't specifically say so many hours are required. It will vary from person to person. Some may finish their studies by studying for 2 hours per day and some may devote even double that also. In my opinion, concentration is more important than extent of time. Proper planning also plays an important role.

After completing the study for the day it is better to review the subject that we have studied which is also very important. Other members can throw some light on this subject,

Devotion to studies will vary from student to student in terms of hours and the classes they are attending. There are some students studying in class ten would take normally three hours on an average for revising their course per day and for some it might take even the double as stated in the former case.
The objective of the revision is to strengthen the concept in their related studies and hence both the parameters are important namely regular study and concentration. I think the later part plays the vital role for the better comprehension of the study materials.

After learning anything, the objective is to retain it for a long time. Studies show that we forget a large part of what we study at the end of a month. To remember things we need to practise regularly and that's why students revise. Rather than devoting long hours daily to studies the student has to properly plan to complete the syllabus within a specific time and also to revise and practise what they are learning regularly. When one has a good level of concentration, the hours required to complete the chapter will be quite less compared to one who is distracted a lot. Nowadays, it is quite easy to get distracted because of a couple of gadgets we use regularly and during the hours of study it is necessary to keep the gadgets away from the place of study. Following the Simple tips to avoid distraction can help.

I feel parents, teachers and the students themselves must find ways to increase the level of concentration and stick to a routine. Rather than thinking about how many hours they require to study daily if they fix the time daily and fully concentrate on studies during that period, the result will be better.

Every student is having a different level of intelligence, grasping of things, and retaining them. Depending on these factors the study hours would differ significantly from each other.
Some students can manage in 2-3 hours per day while other require at least 5-6 hours. Then it also depends on the interest of the students in a particular subject.
It is said that those who study with focus and concentration require less hours as compared to others who do it mechanically with less interest.
It means by increasing the focus and concentration in one's studies one can have a lot of learning and retention within less time.

Our spiritual Guru used to tell us to sit for meditation in prescribed time (set by ourselves) regularly whether doing meditation or not. Once the practice come in our mind, the meditation automatically comes in us once we tasted the taste of meditation.
Similarly one teacher in my brother's daughter school told us to make the children to sit for writing something from the books whether knowing what she is writing or not. But the practice of sitting for writing should come in her and it automatically makes some interest of studying in her day by day.
So, the students should make up their mind daily to sit for study at the prescribed hour daily without fail. This will make him or her to increase the times according to the situation and taste inherited in him/her.
We during our college time used to go to second show cinema and study our lessons after coming from the theater during the study holidays, as we were not addicted to cinema as we all usual cinema goers, our parents allowed us as it would not affect our studies.

As mentioned by the author and seconded in the responses above, the hours of study required for a student will vary from person to person. There are, as we know, slow learners and fast learners. Some have the capacity to grasp things faster and they may not require to sit for long hours to study. But as Sankalan has pointed out, retaining what one studies is more important. So, while one may be able to grasp what he reads it needs to be ensured that he is able to retain what he studies for a longer time. The crux is that one should follow a routine and plan his studies in such a way that he understands what he reads and is able to retain the same in his memory.

I feel that a good student is always prepared. Along with revision, preparing for the next day's class is also equally important. So proper study will include preparation for the next class and revision of what has been taught. One must know his interests and learning capacity and schedule his timing and methods accordingly. Depending upon how much material is there in your syllabus and how much time you take to grasp a topic in its entirety, you must plan and execute your study hours accordingly. It is not how long you sit with your books open but it is how and what you study that matters.
