Why not a common entrance test at national level for engineering like NEET for medical courses?

We all know that NEET is mandatory in our country for admission to medical courses in any medical college in the country. All the states and all private colleges are also participating in this test and seats are being given based on the rank obtained in the entrance test.

But for admissions to engineering such a common entrance test is not there. Each state will have its entrance test. Now We have JEE for NITs and IITs. Why can't the same test should be made compulsory for all colleges of engineering in India? The cut-off mark can be different for each college. Now A candidate who wrote JEE Mains has to write other entrance tests also. If a common test is there, the duplication will not be there and the student will have less stress. I like to know the views of other members on this issue.

The author's suggestion is valuable in the sense that it might cut down the time of the candidates appearing the different engineering tests of the different states and in this process, they waste both time and money apart from unduly stress of outcomes of such tests. Hence there should be at least a common platform of the engineering test. If IIT is conducting its test for scrutiny of candidates for IIT or NIT, this facility can be extended to fill up the vacant seats for other engineering colleges as well with their decided cutoffs. This will facilitate the students to avail of the single chance of entrance test reducing their travel time for appearing the different tests and this arrangement will ease their stress of appearing the multiple test centres for their admission in Engineering.

I thought this thread will go unnoticed and no responses will come. But Jha has brought it up with his comments. I look forward for some more views.

There is a multiplicity of entrance exams for admission to engineering colleges and there is a need to reduce these exams to a bare minimum number and if possible to only one common entrance exam. There are many entrance exams like NET, IAS, Railways etc conducted centrally and students across the country are appearing in that.
Such changes can be brought under the ambit of ongoing NEP process and let us see how these things are incorporated in the coming times.
The number of students participating in the engineering entrance test process are much more than that of the number appearing in NEET so it will be a massive number of students in a single entrance exam but that is not a deal in these times of digital technology where huge data can me managed easily using robust and good applications.

    Knowledge is power.

The academics are seriously thinking about the introduction of NEP Policy to ease the process for admission for the different courses. They would be conducting entrance examination with a single window and the marks obtained in the single test would determine the eligibility criteria of a candidate for a particular institute. In case, the candidate is not fitting the eligibility conditions of a particular college, the committee would see for which a college, his marks are fulfilling the eligibility criteria. In this way, the process will work accommodating the students for admission with their single attempt. This centralised process will definitely help students to secure their seats for the course, they would like to have in their future.
