Mumbai to have vertical university campus

In big cities like Mumbai, there is a shortage of land space and in that respect, the Maharashtra government is going to allow Vertical University Campus in Mumbai. Vertical University means University housed in a tall multistorey tower and there will not be any commercial activity in it except the educational activities of the university which would be going to operate in that building.
In the US as well as some western countries there is the concept of vertical University and some of them are operating in the tall buildings there. Now Maharashtra Govt will be the first state in India to allow such a university to be operating in a tall and spacious building.
What is your opinion about such an arrangement in congested cities where a good amount of land for university campuses is not available for the new universities?

The Vertical University concept may not have any impact on the subject knowledge of the student. But the general lifestyle of a student will get affected a lot I feel. In our primary school, we used to have a big playground and garden. The same is the case in high school, college and university. By the time our children started their studies, in private schools there was no playground. They studied in a building. But their colleges were having good playgrounds and open places. I think by the time our grandchildren start going to university, universities also will be without any open places and playgrounds.
I feel universities should be housed in spacious places with natural greenery and a very good playground etc. In the absence of such ambience, I feel university education will not give a better understanding to the students about their lives and future.

The concept of the vertical university might be a correct step in view of shortage of space being felt these days. If Mumbai is likely to start a vertical university, it is not likely to affect the student- community in any manner unless the other parameters such as enriched curriculum is introduced for the benefits of the students. The university should have a pool of competent professors looking after growth of the students in terms of academics to ensure that they are enjoying the best academic experience from the university.
I hope, the newly formed university will take care of the parameters discussed above so that the students are benefited greatly.

I am not in favor of the concept of a vertical university. It is only in commercial aspects such an idea is muted. I am certain that all such universities are in the private sector only. Such attempts may be discouraged. It is not going to do any good to the students.
Some 50 to 60 years back, schools, colleges, and universities were located in sprawling areas with plenty of grounds for the students to engage themselves in games and sports after classwork for the day was over. The so-called vertical universities do not provide playgrounds for the improvement of the physical health of the students.
Unfortunately, available land is considered for the development of commercial activities.
A healthy nation is a wealthy nation. In my town, politicians have planned to shift the school at which I studied to the outskirts to construct a commercial complex. The Old Students Association of the school is fighting against them in a court of law and a stay was granted. The said school was constructed in 1837 and it looks strong and regal even today. Good playgrounds are available on the school premises. Such is the case in many places. An educational institute should not be considered a real estate asset. We have to blame ourselves for electing such people who do not know the value of education and physical health.

From educational perspective, I have no comment on vertical university. The standard of a university depends upon various factors like quality of teachers, students, research facilities, number of departments, collaboration with other universities within the country and in international arena, library facility for the students, etc. The standard does not depend upon virtual university or horizontal university.
Having said this, I feel that virtual university is not a good thing from students' perspective. Students need interaction in college campus, university campus or in cafetoria.. If there is no campus with greenery, the charm of university life would be over for most of the students.

I think it is such a sad thing to have a vertical university even though it is made while keeping the view that it will help in the shortage of land, but in my opinion environment of university is very important for the all round growth of a student studying there because it is not just the bookish knowledge one seek at university level but also so many other co-curricular activities as well including sports, art and music. How does a student supposed to learn all of these things in closed spaces and small areas. I think we should save enough land atleast for the school, colleges and universities.
