Independence Day Celebrations - Micro-fiction contest

The ever-popular microfiction contest is back! This month we celebrate India's Independence Day, so we invite short - and we mean really short - stories in the form of microfiction. As you know, microfiction is basically a story in its shortest form with a clear-cut start, middle section, and a concluding part, and is generally within 50 words, but for this contest, we are allowing you a maximum limit of double that.

    Theme: Independence Day Celebrations

What you have to do: Write a fictional micro story limited to 100 words centered on the theme and related to the field of education/academics, the narrative having a smooth flow from beginning to end. Thus, within the confines of the word limit, a creative story should unfold. It can be any genre and have some conversational bits too. Give a relevant title to the micro story. You can use the edit button to fix errors in the text but do not change the core story.

    The rules are simple-
    1. The micro story should be in English, and not more than 100 words (the minimum number of words can be as per your choice). It must be based on the theme and must in some way have an association with education/academics.
    2. A member can submit up to a maximum of three entries. All entries should be submitted only in a response to this thread, and if you are submitting more than one, then each entry should be submitted in separate responses. In case you submit two consecutive responses, you will need to wait for another member to submit a response in order to submit the third entry.
    3. Do not include any links, slang words, references to weapons, drugs, inflammatory statements, disrespectful language, and the like. Strictly adhere to our site's policies and guidelines.

    The rewards-
Up to three entries will each receive a cash prize of Rs.75/-. A further prize of Rs. 50/- may be given depending on the number of quality entries received. Enhanced points and cash credits (cc) may also be given to non-winning entries. Note that each entry will be judged in its individuality so whether you submit one microfiction or two or three is immaterial. In case all your entries are reward worthy, you will get one of the main cash prizes, and the other entries will get the enhanced points and cc. A creative title may get a couple of extra points (the title will not be counted in the word limit.)

What we are looking for: Something unique, something creative! Think out of the box, and come up with situations on the campus or off it that fit in with both, the theme, and the field of education/academics. Some basic ideas- a microfiction related to a campus hostel, a school picnic, an entrance exam, an admission GD, etc.

    Closing date: 11th August 2023.

Come...celebrate our Independence Day with a micro story!

A small clarification is required. Are the members supposed to write only fictional story? Can't I write about real-life incident/personality?

    Partha,

It is clearly mentioned to submit a fictional story.

    Vandana,

Do we need to include the phrase," Independence Day celebrations" in the title?

  • #774451
No Bhavani, that is not necessary. You can put any title that you want. Even if the words are not included in the text of the story, that is fine, as long as the theme comes across clearly. Everyone should just ensure that the story is based on the theme and related to education/academics as per the rules given.

Title: Learning self-reliance part of early childhood education

Vicky, a first-grade kid woke up and got ready to school earlier than usual since there was an Independence Day celebration with flag hoisting at his school to salute the departed freedom fighters.

He was taught what independence really was by his father the previous day. He realized independence also meant being self-reliant doing his daily routine on his own like waking up by himself, packing his school bag, getting ready for school, etc.

Vicky learned self-reliance and did whatever he could do without disturbing his parents. This would be his real Independence Day celebration then.

Celebration of Independence Day in an incredible Way.
A few nights back, I had a fine dream witnessing all our popular leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Respected Nehru, Subash Bose, Bhagat Singh, Khudiram Bose sitting together in heaven and were discussing how they put their maximum efforts to get back this independence from the Britishers.
They are now happy that Rishi Sunak of an Indian - origin, Is the prime minister of England ruling the country successfully showing a miracle change of dynasty.
Gandhi JEE almost cried to see such a fantastic achievement. He noted how a great change in respect of dynasty has occurred in England with the origin of Indian Prime Minister.
This dream often haunts me even now.

On the Independence Day, after the flag-hoisting, all staff organized an oath-taking ceremony. They took oath to help the underprivileged students.

    Birth of a Patriot

Seema, a teacher, went to her school with her four-year-old daughter Neha on India's Independence Day. The school was well decorated, and students were busy preparing for the Independence Day celebration.

Seema sat with Neha among her colleagues to watch the ceremony. A little after, the headmistress hoisted the national flag of India. Everyone stood up, and the school band started playing the national anthem. The headmistress saluted the flag, and the march-past by the students began.

Suddenly, Seema glimpsed at Neha and felt amazed. Neha was standing straight and saluting the national flag. Well, a tiny patriot was born!
