Independence Day celebrations in schools should instil patriotism in students

Independence Day is celebrated today all over the country with great enthusiasm. All schools conduct flag hoisting in their schools on this day. The aim of these celebrations should be to remember the stories of India's struggle for independence and pass them forward to future generations.

Definitely, schools will play an important role in instilling patriotism among students. Schools should plan singing competitions by asking students to sing patriotic songs and students should be encouraged to give speeches about the freedom fight and also about the people who sacrificed their lives for the independence of the country. Conducting a quiz program with questions related to the independence struggle will also be very useful. These activities will be very useful in making the students know the history of the nation and also the importance of values in life.

I think all the members will be in agreement with me.

Though the schools are taking active interest to develop the feelings of patriotism among the students with the coverage of multiple activities such inclusions of patriotic songs and telling them how relentlessly the freedom- fighters fought the battle for getting freedom.
It is definitely a single day session and its impact is short - lived. What is needed to inculcate patriotism within the mindsets of the pupils is to arrange a regular session of the involvements of freedom fighters with their full dedication. This will help them to realise their sacrifices and will encourage them to implement their qualities depending upon their temperament.

The present scenario in younger generations are not properly minded by elders and they almost drop or neglect the youngsters in their way. Many youngsters do not know their grandparents names, native places, or names of close relatives by thinking that they are so smart and have no meaning in knowing such details.

Similarly in almost many States the school subjects especially history subject do not contain details about the earlier rulers of our India and the motto of War of Independence. Many political leaders obliged such a situation by affirming that the knowledge about earlier rulers of our India and War of Independence are all unnecessary.

Further, in many States the students are forced to link themselves with some political parties, especially by ruling parties of their State. In such a situation how can we motivate patriotism in the youngsters' minds? Moreover, they are in the position of asking the meaning of patriotism. First of all the subjects of History in all class levels should be altered as in the 1980s. Every student should be made to know about the states of our country.

Initiating the patriotism in children should come from all directions, that is from house, school and media. In 1952 a tamil weekly magazine, called 'Ananda vikadan' depicted the cover of the magazine with full of tricolor.
