Why school bags are getting heavier than the weight of a kid in schools

At a very tender age, when it is time for kids to enjoy the early stage of life are thrusted with heavy school bags filled with a dozen books unnecessarily inflicting a burden on their tender souls. Even scholars would hesitate to carry heavy bags filled with heavy books that won't fetch them enough or help in their research. Then why exact pressure on kids as young as 4 or 5 years old? Carrying too many books at a tender age can't make kids a pilot not land them on the moon but stop their free cognitive capabilities which may hamper their progress in future. Relieve kids of the extra burden and unnecessary books to feel comfortable during schooling, so they get some confidence to move ahead in life.

This matter has been discussed on this platform time and again.

Education being a subject included in the Concurrent List of the Constitution, every state and the centre have law in this regard. But schools (especially private schools) all over the country ignore these rules.

Guardians also feel that the more heavy the school bag is, the more education will the child get.

The children suffer physically and mentally due to heavy school bags.

At the first stage, strong and hard 'danda' and huge fine to authorities of those schools breaking rules will do a lot of good. Thereafter building consciousness among the guardians will be required.

We need to pay more attention to the growth of the kids with the good lessons provided by the teachers- not burdening them with a school bag containing heavy books for their growth.
The kids are innocents not acting violently to such odd situations but accept the same as their part of their routine life to bear such a heavy burden.
However, its impact is severe ultimately due to exertion of heavy pressure on their back which could accelerate the deformation of some bones of the backside apart from muscular pains time to time.
Some public schools, I have observed don't allow such a system to exist for the convenience of the students. They request the parents to keep a set of books prescribed in the syllabus to in the school itself and the teachers distribute them prior to start of the classes and again they take the same for the next sessions whenever required. This arrangement seems to be a practical solution.

This is a real problem that is being faced by many school-going children.
Every day they will have all the subject classes. For each subject, there will be a class note and a homework note. Anyhow, there will be a textbook also for each subject. All these put together the load is increasing. The kid has to carry that much weight every day. In addition to that there will be a lunch box also and also a water bottle.
The students will get accustomed to carrying weights. On the lighter side, some people say carrying heavy weights may become their livelihood earning source.
In digital education, I think only one phone or digital book will serve the purpose and then they need not carry heavy weights.
One class workbook and one home workbook should become common for all subjects. Then the load of books may come down I feel.

Heavy school bags are not a good thing for the little children and would load them unnecessarily. In some schools there are facilities of keeping some of the books or other items in lockers but that is also a cumbersome process and teachers have to spend a lot of time in helping the students for keeping the things in that way. The students have to take out the required books and rotate them between school and house . That would become a bit inconvenient also.
Another solution is to divide the thicker books in parts and carry only the relevant part. We have of course to see the practical side of such an arrangement. Publishers would have to print in that fashion and that would not be an economical option.

The main reason for this is the taking classes to the students according to the Time Table. It may be correct sometimes in saying that the students should alert themselves in all subjects if asked but for that the carrying books become a heavy load in them. Especially the students in many schools are not eating breakfast and sometimes they are poor eaters so that the carrying of such heavy book baggage become problem. I have seen two girl students suffered from back bone degeneration due to this.
In Tamil Nadu, to reduce this the Government itself made arrangements to split the entire syllabus into three books. However this is only for the standards up to eighth standard.
In some schools especially in Government schools, I have seen, the teachers themselves watching the students individually and advice not to bring notes and books which are not according to the Time Table.
