Admission criteria for NEET-PG seats is lowered to zero percentile

For last few years many seats in NEET-PG admissions are going vacant in our country. In view of this discouraging trend the Central Education Ministry has taken a decision to lower the eligibility criteria for admission from 50 percentile to zero percentile.

These vacant seats are mostly in the disciplines like Microbiology, Preventive and Social Medicines, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Forensic Medicine, Physiology etc.

It is also mentioned that every year seats are being increased in various courses but demand for them is not increasing in the same proportion. Let us see how the lowering of eligibility criteria now helps in this matter.

There are two aspects to this. Medical education takes a long time and is costly. It may take a minimum of six years after the 12th class to complete their MBBS. Then PG means another 2 years. So many people are thinking about whether to go to PG or not. The second aspect is the standard of the examination. The standard is very high means many students may not be able to fare well. A student must complete an internship of duration one year before they opt for a PG course.
The cut-off mark will be changed from year to year based on the performance of the students. As mentioned by the author, just appearing for the NEET exam is enough to be eligible to get admitted to PG. Generally, it may be happening in the seats allotted for reserve categories even in Engineering.

To qualify the NEET test conducted by the CBSE is itself a tough test both for undergraduate and postgraduate levels requiring the full concentration of the existing syllabus
The other factor is that studying such courses takes enormous time as compared to other professional courses. Even getting a chance for MD/ MS is a difficult task for an aspirant due to the nature of thr the test. It means that there could be a wastage of some more years in securing admission for the postgraduate medical course.
Considering these factors, the new proposal seems to be the realistic solution,

It is good that the central government has lowered the criteria to zero percentile. But it should also be vital that we do not compromise with the quality of education. Medical science is the most critical field of education and the medical student must be serious about their education.
    Honesty is the best policy.
