One should study the subject to understand but not reproduce

Students will learn through hearing the lectures of the teachers and reading books. Any student should understand the subject well and use the same for solving the problems that they encounter in their lives.

Some students go on reading the books repeatedly and mug up so that they can reproduce the same in examinations. However, this type of study will be of no use to the individual. Even he/ she may not be able to perform well in the examination.

The students should understand the subject and if there are any doubts, they should get it clarified by asking their teachers. Then only they will get a grip on the subject and become skilled. I like to know the views of other members on this issue.

The author has raised a very interesting issue about the students who are cramming their lessons or answers in a hope to reproduce it in the examination. But that is something which would not help them in long run because if they do not understand the topic then in future they would not understand anything taught to them in the same topic in its advanced stage. Cramming is only important for remembering some data for a short while and that is all about it that can help a student. But understanding a concept and the topic where it is mentioned is the real acquisition of knowledge. More we understand a process or content inside a topic, more our knowledge would increase. If a concept is well understood at the time of studies then it remains with us for lifetime.
The purpose of studies is to understand the subject and not to reproduce the contents in the examination.

    Knowledge is power.

Although many educationists and normal educated people give stress on understanding rather than learning by heart, my personal experience is/was entirely different. The chapters/concepts (especially in Physics) which I could not understand, I resorted to rote learning. Subsequently, at higher level, I understood the underlying concept which I had failed to understand earlier.

Many students resort to rote learning. Without learning by heart, education is not possible. Understanding the concept comes at later stage.

I earlier explained my experience in details in my award-winning thread of May 2022:
If you don't understand the concept, don't worry! Simply rote it

I request other members to read it and give their opinion on this age-old issue for students all over the world.

One or two topics if you are not able to understand, it may be alright to rote them. But if everything is not understood and start mugging up them will be a difficult issue and remembering everything is a big strain on your mind. That is what personally I feel.

It is a nice representation from the author's side. He has stressed the need of understanding the basic of the topic which he studying. It should not be read such that the details read has to be produced in the similar way as read.
Simply to pass an examination with this attitude cannot benefit a student unless the topic undertaken for the study is fully understood and he can write the same in his own language. Normally in the question paper a student can find this instruction mentioned at the top of the question paper to draw his attention.
Forming such an habit wil surely boost the confidence level of a candidate which will ultimately open the door of his success in his ensuring examination.
